Nasa astronaut Anil Menon is poised to conduct his first-ever spacewalk on Thursday, August 6. This significant event will take place outside the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a mission to enhance the power systems of the orbital laboratory. Menon, who was born in Minneapolis to Ukrainian and Indian immigrant parents, will be accompanied by fellow astronaut Jessica Meir during this operation.

The spacewalk is slated to commence at 5:35 pm IST and is expected to last approximately six and a half hours. Nasa’s coverage of the mission will start earlier at 4:00 pm IST, allowing viewers to engage with the preparations leading up to the event.

Anil Menon has been depicted completing checks on his spacesuit prior to his launch to the ISS, highlighting the rigorous preparations that astronauts undergo before embarking on such missions.

Main Objectives of the Spacewalk

During the spacewalk, Menon and Meir will exit the ISS through the Quest airlock, which serves as the primary access point for extravehicular activities. Their main objective is to install hardware modifications to the station’s 3B power channel. This work will lay the groundwork for the addition of another International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array (IROSA) later in the year.

The planned IROSA will become the seventh solar panel installed on the ISS and is critical for augmenting the power supply necessary for various essential operations. This includes supporting systems required for the safe de-orbiting of the ISS in the future.

In this mission, Jessica Meir will serve as crew member 1, donning a suit marked with red stripes, while Menon will take on the role of crew member 2, wearing an unmarked suit. The distinction in their suits assists ground control in identifying the astronauts during the mission.

The Importance of US Spacewalk 96

US Spacewalk 96 is particularly notable as it addresses the ISS’s reliance on solar panels, which are vital for generating electricity that powers everything from scientific investigations to life-support systems. Spacewalks, like this one, are essential for conducting tasks that cannot be performed inside the station, including the installation and upgrading of external equipment.

This upcoming spacewalk will represent the 281st outing conducted in support of the assembly, maintenance, and upgrades of the ISS. Moreover, it marks the first of three US spacewalks scheduled for the month of August, illustrating the ongoing commitment to maintaining the functionality of the space station.

The subsequent spacewalk, labelled US Spacewalk 97, is due on August 13 and will focus on replacing a space-to-ground communications antenna. This equipment facilitates data transmission and high-speed communication between Mission Control in Houston and the ISS. Furthermore, another spacewalk set for August 25 will involve connecting power-channel cables and data relay systems, alongside replacing a navigation aid used by visiting spacecraft.
