Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to him regarding the current flood crisis affecting the state. In a message shared on X, Sarma detailed that the Prime Minister sought updates regarding the seriousness of the situation and the ongoing relief efforts. Sarma stated, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji telephoned me a short while ago to enquire about the prevailing Assam floods. He sought an update on the extent of the devastation, the ongoing relief operations and the challenges we are confronting on the ground.”

Government Response to the Flood Situation

The Chief Minister provided the Prime Minister with information on the state government’s initiatives aimed at assisting affected communities. Sarma assured that efforts are being made to reach every family impacted by the floods. “I briefed him on the measures being undertaken by the State Government and our efforts to reach out to every affected family,” he conveyed.

Expressing sorrow for the loss of life and property, the Prime Minister reportedly assured that the Government of India is prioritising the situation. According to Sarma, Modi committed to extend all possible support for relief and rehabilitation operations. “This calamity is being accorded the highest priority and the Government of India will extend every possible support to aid our relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts,” Sarma quoted the Prime Minister.

In his statements, Sarma also expressed appreciation for the Prime Minister’s prompt response and ongoing support during this critical period. He stated, “The people of Assam are deeply grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji for his reassurance and steadfast support during this difficult time.”

Death Toll and Overall Impact of the Floods

As the situation unfolds, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reported an increase in the death toll, which has now reached 61. In the last 24 hours, 14 more individuals were confirmed dead. Notably, the fatalities included 11 males and three females, with seven deaths occurring in Charaideo district, six in Sivasagar, and one in Jorhat. Furthermore, authorities mentioned that there is one individual still unaccounted for in Sivasagar district.

The overall impact of the floods continues to be severe, affecting over 7.05 lakh residents across 12 districts, namely Golaghat, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Nagaon, Biswanath, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Kamrup (M), and Karbi Anglong. Sivasagar has been identified as the district most significantly impacted, with 3,48,555 individuals affected. Following Sivasagar, Charaideo reported 1,88,404 affected individuals, while Jorhat has 1,26,793.

According to the ASDMA report, 856 villages and 37 revenue circles have been adversely impacted by the flooding, illustrating the extensive reach of this natural disaster. The government is mobilising resources and personnel to cope with the ongoing crisis and assist the affected populations.
