On August 12, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Twade announced a financial package of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those who perished in the recent landslide in Kurla. The tragic event occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, resulting in six fatalities and four injuries. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), reflecting the city’s commitment to aiding affected families in their time of need.
In addition to the assistance for the deceased, the Mayor also declared a compensation of Rs 50,000 for each individual who sustained injuries during the incident. Mayor Twade visited the site shortly after the disaster to express her condolences to the grieving families, highlighting the community’s support during such a tragic event. She emphasised the need for quick and well-coordinated relief efforts.
Details of the Landslide Incident
The landslide was reported to have occurred at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, located near Rathod Medical in Kurla around 3:48 am. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ganesh Shinde attributed the tragedy to heavy rainfall that had impacted the region. As of now, the recovery of two bodies has been confirmed, while rescue operations continue to locate any individuals who may still be trapped.
Emergency teams were promptly dispatched to the site. This included personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police. Their primary focus has been on executing rescue operations and ensuring the safety of all individuals affected by the slide. DCP Shinde indicated that approximately four to five individuals were suspected to be trapped under the debris.
According to reports, the BMC has mobilised its officials and workers to accelerate the ongoing rescue efforts. In conjunction with local law enforcement and medical teams, they are striving to manage the situation effectively and provide necessary aid to those in need.
Rescue Operations Underway
The rescue operation is reportedly being conducted with utmost urgency, involving multiple agencies working collaboratively. The BMC has stated that their effort will continue until all individuals are accounted for, prioritising both immediate rescue and longer-term recovery measures for affected families. The 108 ambulance service has been activated to transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.
Preliminary reports indicate that both bodies recovered belong to individuals who were living in makeshift structures that succumbed to the landslide. The local authorities are in the process of gathering more information regarding the condition of the injured and the full extent of the damage incurred during the incident.
