The Tribal Migrants’ Protection Committee (TMPK) member Bhavez Miri has condemned the recent shooting incident along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, which resulted in nine individuals from Assam being injured. Miri described the escalation as unprecedented in the context of the ongoing border dispute. His comments were reported following the incident that occurred on August 9.

Miri expressed the organisation’s commitment to addressing the issue across a range of locations, specifically from Sadiya to Buruli, in a bid to seek justice for the victims. The leader noted that while none of the injuries were to vital areas such as the head or chest, the condition of some victims remains uncertain as they are still undergoing treatment in hospital.

While admitting that conflicts related to the border have arisen previously, Miri highlighted that the use of firearms marks a significant and alarming change. He emphasised the need for dialogue, which he believes has been a longstanding approach among the communities involved.

Community Appeals for Respect and Co-existence

He remarked that the recent shooting must not divert the focus from their historically cooperative relationships. Miri was candid in showing the urgency for restoring dialogue to prevent further violence and misunderstandings, reinforcing the importance of human dignity in their interactions.

The calls for dialogue come in light of a second shooting incident reported shortly after the first, which left at least eleven more individuals from Assam injured. These developments have heightened ongoing tensions regarding alleged land encroachment by residents from Arunachal Pradesh into Assam’s territory.

Government Responses to Border Tensions

In response to the recent violence, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that senior state officials are working closely with their counterparts in Arunachal Pradesh to manage the situation. The discussions involve both the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of the respective states.

Sarma revealed plans for investigations to ascertain the circumstances and responsible parties behind the incidents, emphasising the need for accountability. He underscored the commitment to protecting Assam’s land and expressed confidence in a negotiated resolution of the conflict.

The Chief Minister also indicated that the confrontation was a localised matter between some individuals from the two states, which has reportedly been addressed. He shared that the Education Minister has been sent to liaise with the relevant officials in Arunachal Pradesh to help facilitate a resolution.

As governmental organisations work aid reconciliation efforts, the focus remains on ensuring the protection of inhabitants in the border region while fostering dialogue to maintain peaceful coexistence.
