In response to the devastating floods caused by heavy monsoon rains in Keralam, volunteers and various voluntary organisations in Tiruchirappalli have initiated a collection drive to gather essential supplies for affected families. This initiative aims to support those who have been directly impacted by flooding and are currently residing in relief camps. The ongoing rainfall has significantly affected multiple regions across Keralam, particularly Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam, which have experienced some of the most severe conditions.

As a result of the incessant rains, normal life has been disrupted, and road connectivity has been severely impacted in low-lying areas. Reports indicate that over 7,000 individuals have been relocated to relief camps, seeking assistance from both the government and local communities. The collaborative effort in Tiruchirappalli focuses on collecting items that will specifically cater to the immediate needs of those in these camps.

Types of Supplies Collected for Affected Families

Volunteers have been actively gathering a variety of essential supplies to support the flood victims. Items sourced include biscuits, sanitary napkins, diapers, nightwear, as well as new T-shirts and shorts for children. In addition, non-perishable food items, bleaching powder, and disinfectants were also collected to aid the local communities in addressing hygiene and dietary needs.

Alongside these essential items, significant quantities of grocery supplies were assembled for families in need. The food packages contained 5-kg portions of rice, along with staples such as green gram, wheat flour, rava, toor dal, chickpeas, and sugar. Furthermore, various spices and kitchen essentials, including chilli powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, sambar powder, coriander powder, mustard, and coffee powder, were also included in the packages. One-litre packs of cooking oil were an important addition to the collection, ensuring that affected families receive the necessary ingredients for meal preparation.

The collection effort saw participation from numerous organisations and the public, which demonstrated strong community engagement in assisting those in distress. Designated collection centres were set up across the city, including Kauvery Hospital branches in Cantonment and Thennur, the VDart office in Mannarpuram, Kauvery Clinic in Ariyamangalam, and Aswin Sweets outlets located at Chatram Bus Stand, Kattur, Vayalur Road, and KK Nagar.

Transport and Distribution of Relief Materials

The coordination of this significant initiative was undertaken by social activist and environmentalist Manoj Dharmar, who mobilised a network of volunteers and organisations to effectively manage the collection and distribution process. Following the collection drive, nearly 10 tonnes of relief materials were efficiently packed for transport to Keralam. This process culminated in the dispatch of the collected items on Sunday.

The van carrying the relief supplies was officially flagged off by the Tiruchirappalli District Revenue Officer (DRO) Balaji, in the presence of volunteers and organisers who played vital roles in the initiative. The materials are set to be distributed among those affected by the relentless rains and floods, particularly focusing on individuals currently residing in relief camps.

This concerted effort has provided much-needed assistance at a critical time, as thousands of families continue to grapple with the repercussions of severe weather conditions in the region. The collection and transportation of these essential items reflect a robust community spirit and commitment to supporting those in dire situations.
