People’s Power: Villagers Raise Rs 1 Crore To Build Bridge Over Magai River

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a remarkable display of community resolve, residents of Kyampur Chhavni village in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district have inaugurated a crowdfunded bridge over the Magai River, ending a wait that spanned six decades. Built without direct government intervention, the structure stands as a powerful example of grassroots action addressing long-standing infrastructure gaps.

Stretching 105 feet in length and 9.5 feet in width, the bridge was formally inaugurated on Sunday by Allahabad High Court judge Justice Shekhar Yadav. The project, completed after 2 years, 1 month and 18 days of sustained effort, was funded entirely through public contributions amounting to nearly Rs 1 crore.

A Soldier’s Vision Turns Into Reality

The initiative was spearheaded by Captain (retired) Ravindra Yadav, a civil engineer and former member of the 55 Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army’s Corps of Engineers. After retiring in January 2024 following three decades of service, Yadav returned to his ancestral village and was struck by the daily struggles faced by residents due to the absence of a permanent crossing.

Determined to bring change, he conceptualised and led the construction of the bridge, mobilising support from villagers, well-wishers and former colleagues. Construction began in March 2024 and progressed steadily, driven entirely by community participation and crowdfunding.

The project also drew attention within defence circles. Yadav’s home regiment deputed a junior commissioned officer to attend the inauguration, underscoring the significance of the effort. The initiative gained wider recognition after being highlighted in national media, prompting inspections by the Public Works Department and the Indian Army, both of which acknowledged the scale and impact of the work.

A Lifeline For Thousands

The Magai River, originating in Azamgarh’s Dubawan village, flows through Mau and Ghazipur districts before merging with the Tamsa river and eventually the Ganga. Despite being only 70–80 feet wide at Kyampur, the river had long acted as a major barrier for local residents.

Kyampur village, with a population of around 3,500, along with nearly 50 surrounding villages housing over 70,000 people, had been severely affected by the lack of connectivity. Residents were forced to travel up to 40 km to cover a distance of just 15 km due to the absence of a bridge.

For decades, villagers relied on fragile boats to cross the river, often risking their lives to access essential services such as the Nonahara market, district headquarters and hospitals. Several incidents of boats capsizing, including those carrying schoolchildren, had been reported over the years, intensifying demands for a permanent solution.

Recognition And A Symbol Of Change

The bridge project received encouragement from several quarters. Major General (retired) Ajay Chaturvedi, who had previously worked with Yadav, contributed over Rs 1 lakh and helped mobilise additional support. Praising the effort, he described Yadav as an officer who consistently went beyond the call of duty.

In recognition of his contribution, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi honoured Honorary Captain and Subedar Ravindra Yadav with the Veteran Achievers Award in September 2025.

For the people of Kyampur and neighbouring villages, the bridge represents far more than a physical structure. It symbolises access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities that had remained out of reach for generations. As Yadav noted during the inauguration, the bridge stands as a testament to what collective determination can achieve when communities take charge of their own development.
