India expressed its willingness to provide “any help in any manner” to help bring an end to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. This statement was made by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during discussions with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv. Following their meeting, Jaishankar underlined the importance of resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, emphasising India’s long-standing stance on the issue.

Jaishankar noted that his visit aimed to explore the potential for further discussions between the conflicting parties and mentioned he would relay the sentiments shared by his Ukrainian counterpart. Sybiha appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks advocating for a transition from continuous warfare to a peaceful resolution, indicating Ukraine’s willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts.

Concerns Over Rising Hostilities and Humanitarian Issues

While in Kyiv, Jaishankar highlighted the escalating hostilities that have marked the conflict since 2022. He acknowledged the tragic loss of an Indian national in a recent attack, expressing condolences and solidarity with the families affected. The Minister reiterated that every lost life in the conflict is a tragedy, reinforcing India’s humanitarian approach during these challenging times.

Concerns regarding attacks on merchant vessels in the Black Sea were raised during the discussions. Jaishankar pointed out that Indian seafarers, who operate under various flags, have also faced unfortunate casualties. He remarked that disruptions in shipping are resonating throughout many nations of the Global South, affecting the availability of crucial resources such as fuel, fertiliser, and food.

The talks featured an open exchange regarding the specific challenges arising from the ongoing war, indicating a collaborative spirit between the two nations to address shared concerns.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties Amidst Conflict

Jaishankar referred to India’s support in humanitarian relief to Ukraine, which includes a series of 19 shipments of assistance. The Minister elaborated on the wide-ranging trade relations between the two nations, spanning pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and chemicals. He acknowledged that the conflict and its associated logistical challenges had affected trade dynamics over the past four years, yet expressed optimism about resilience and new opportunities growing from their interactions.

Both leaders discussed the strengths and capabilities of Ukraine, which Jaishankar recognised, highlighting India’s rapid development in areas such as digital technology, innovation, and startups. He mentioned that advancements in artificial intelligence present new possibilities across various sectors, including health and education, which could be beneficial for both nations.

Inviting further collaboration, Jaishankar proposed that Sybiha visit India for the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission. This would allow both countries to review the conflict’s impact and discuss areas of humanitarian aid, shipping concerns, and bilateral cooperation more thoroughly.
