The Jana Sena Party announced the successful completion of a significant drinking water initiative aimed at alleviating chronic kidney disease concerns in A Konduru mandal, located in the NTR district of Andhra Pradesh. The project, known as the Jal Jeevan Mission-Amarajeevi Jaladhara, was carried out under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and involved an investment of Rs 49.94 crore. This initiative aims to provide safe drinking water to approximately 75,000 individuals across 38 habitations within the mandal.

A Konduru has been reportedly facing severe drinking water quality issues, akin to the challenges observed in the Uddanam region of Andhra Pradesh. The mandal is composed of 21 gram panchayats and includes 15 tribal hamlets, a demographic particularly vulnerable to health issues resulting from inadequate water quality.

For years, residents have resorted to consuming contaminated water, raising significant public health concerns. Recognising the urgency of the situation, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan committed to ensuring access to safe drinking water shortly after assuming office, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.

Progress and Challenges Faced During Implementation

The Jana Sena Party claimed that this project was implemented in partnership with the Rural Water Supply Department, using funds sourced from the Jal Jeevan Mission and the Amarajeevi Jaladhara scheme. The project reportedly reached full completion in just 26 months, which the party highlighted as a swift turnaround compared to the prior administration, which it alleged had failed to initiate the tendering process despite announcing the project.

Concerns about the project’s future intensified after the original deadline for the Jal Jeevan Mission expired in March 2024. However, intervention from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan helped revitalise the project, with the Central Government later extending the Jal Jeevan Mission and releasing the requisite state funds to propel progress.

The water for this initiative is being sourced from the Krishna River via the NTPC canal located at Ibrahimpatnam. The implementation includes a 130-kilometre pipeline network complemented by 12 overhead tanks, designed to ensure efficient distribution of treated water.

Anticipated Benefits and Future Assessments

The project intends to provide residential tap connections to inhabitants across all 38 habitations, supplying a daily allocation of 55 litres of safe drinking water for each individual. The streamlined approach was made possible through coordination among various governmental departments, including Panchayat Raj, Rural Development, Revenue, Forest, and Environment.

Prior to the completion of this project, the state reportedly incurred costs of nearly Rs 2.5 crore annually to provide drinking water to the mandal through tanker services. The successful execution of the project is projected to serve as a sustainable solution to the long-standing water shortage and aims to mitigate health issues linked to unsafe drinking water.

As a final step in this initiative, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan is expected to visit A Konduru in the coming days to evaluate the completed work and assess the quality of the water supplied through the newly established infrastructure.
