Handoff Feature’s Functionality and Setup

Users can conveniently configure the iPhone Handoff feature via the Settings app, specifically within the Cellular menu. During the initial setup process, individuals will select one iPhone to serve as the primary device, while designating the other as a companion device. This setup is crucial for allowing users to switch between devices effortlessly while maintaining the same phone number.

According to Apple, the primary eSIM profile remains linked to the main iPhone, whereas a companion eSIM will be created for the secondary device. This arrangement ensures that users can alternate between their two iPhones without any disruption in service or connectivity.

Account management is centralised, meaning all cellular plans and settings are controlled through the main iPhone. Additionally, the location sharing feature automatically updates based on the device that is currently connected to the service, allowing contacts to accurately view the location of the active phone in the Find My application.

Carrier Support Requirements

For the iPhone Handoff feature to operate effectively, having iOS 27 installed on both devices will not be the sole requirement. The functionality appears to be significantly dependent on telecom carrier support, similar to how cellular provisioning functions with the Apple Watch. Early indications suggest that major carriers like T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany may be among the first to endorse this feature.
