The announcement to convert the Okhla landfill into an “Oxygen Park” aims to ensure effective utilisation of reclaimed landfill land, according to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. This initiative is intended to promote a cleaner and greener environment for residents in the vicinity of the site. Details of the Transformation

The State government plans to develop approximately 37 acres of land that has been reclaimed from the ongoing clearance of the Okhla dump. Gupta emphasised the importance of this project in showcasing how areas previously dominated by waste can be repurposed for public benefit and environmental restoration. Once completed, this transformation is expected to significantly alter the landscape from a garbage-filled site to a vibrant green area.

During an event that also marked the introduction of new public transportation assets, Gupta highlighted the successful clearance of a lengthy-established landfill in Delhi. She specified that the Okhla site had contained around 70 lakh metric tonnes of waste, which has now been significantly reduced to only the fresh refuse accumulated over the last year. This successful clearance sets a precedent for similar efforts across the capital.

Gupta expressed her optimism regarding the positive impact this initiative will have on air quality and public health. She stated, “The people who endured the stench of this garbage mountain for years will now enjoy cool, fresh air and a pollution-free environment thanks to this Oxygen Park.” This sentiment underscores the project’s potential to improve the quality of life for local communities.

As part of this ongoing effort, the administration is also exploring additional reclamation projects at other sites in the capital, in line with the objective of sustainable urban development.
