The Indian men’s javelin throw team will feature a new athlete, as 24-year-old Yashvir Singh has been selected to replace Neeraj Chopra for the forthcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Athletics Federation of India announced this change on Thursday, with Yashvir joining Rohit Yadav in the two-member squad. Neeraj Chopra, who has been a pivotal figure in Indian athletics, will miss the Games following an ankle ligament injury that has prematurely ended his 2026 season.

Despite Neeraj’s absence, Yashvir’s recent performances provide a promising outlook for India’s javelin prospects. The athlete is coming off a successful Commonwealth Games campaign, where he secured a bronze medal in Glasgow in July, recording a personal best throw of 85.41 metres. This achievement signifies a notable advancement in Yashvir’s career, as he has consistently surpassed the 80-metre mark and demonstrated his potential in previous competitions.

Rohit Yadav’s Consistency Bodes Well

Rohit Yadav has emerged as one of India’s most reliable javelin throwers this season, alongside Chopra. The 25-year-old athlete registered his personal best and a meet record with a throw of 87.05 metres at the National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships held in Bhubaneswar in June 2026. At that time, this achievement was recorded as the second-best throw in the world for the season.

Earlier in the season, Rohit demonstrated consistent performance by winning the Ludhiana event with a throw of 83.76 metres, placing him ahead of Yashvir, who managed 82.93 metres. Both athletes not only excelled at their events but also surpassed the Asian Games qualification standard of 77.87 metres, thus travelling to Japan with realistic ambitions of securing a medal.

While neither athlete bears the same level of public expectation that has historically accompanied Chopra, their individual performances indicate an ability to compete effectively. With both Yashvir and Rohit capable of throwing beyond 80 metres, the Indian duo approaches the competition with optimistic aspirations.

Outlook for the Javelin Event at the Asian Games

Chopra’s withdrawal will undoubtedly leave a gap in the Indian athletics landscape. The two-time Olympic medallist had recently returned to competitive action only in June, following an injury absence of nine months, and appeared to regain his form, achieving a throw of 88.05 metres to finish second in Lausanne shortly before his unfortunate injury.

The competitive landscape for the javelin event in Aichi-Nagoya promises to be intense. Among the leading contenders is the world leader and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who has achieved two throws exceeding 92 metres this season, hence securing his position as the favourite for gold. Additionally, Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, who did not qualify for the men’s javelin final at the Commonwealth Games, will be seeking redemption during the upcoming Asian Games.

As the focus shifts to Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav, both athletes may not hold the stature of Chopra, yet they remain integral to maintaining India’s podium hopes in the javelin throw at the Asian Games. Their performances could serve as a testament to India’s growing prowess in athletics.
