The Ashtami Rohini Vallasadya at the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple is set to be celebrated on September 4. This event marks the birthday of Lord Krishna and is expected to attract a large number of devotees. Various preparations are being finalised to accommodate approximately 50,000 attendees, including members from 52 local communities, known as palliyoda karas, who will gather at the temple.

Locals from Chenappady village in Kottayam district have already reached Aranmula to offer palathairu, which consists of curd served in traditional palm-leaf containers. This particular offering holds cultural significance and is a customary part of the festival, traditionally requested by boatmen through songs. The curd is sourced from the cowshed at the Vazhoor Sree Theerthapada Ashram, where the preparation takes place under the supervision of the ashram’s head.

This year, around 1,500 litres of curd will be provided, reflecting the scale and importance of the celebration. The offering will be presented by Vazhoor Prajnanananda Theerthapada Swamiji, the head of the ashram, enhancing the traditional aspect of the occasion.

Rituals and Arrangements For The Feast

The rituals for the feast are scheduled to commence at 12 noon on September 4, coinciding with the Ashtami Rohini day. The President of the Travancore Devaswom Board, K. Jayakumar, will initiate the ceremony by lighting the ceremonial lamp at the Anakkottil. Following this, the feast will be dedicated to Lord Krishna, setting the tone for a communal celebration.

Arrangements include a grand feast made using 501 paras of rice, prepared specifically for this auspicious occasion. While devotees often conduct Vallasadya as an offering on ordinary days, the Ashtami Rohini celebration is distinct in that it is believed Lord Krishna himself serves the feast to his followers on his birthday.

The dining hall situated on the southern side of the temple is designated for the community meal, where the wider group of devotees will be served. In addition, special guests will be accommodated at the Panchajanyam Auditorium, while contributors to the Ashtami Rohini Vallasadya will receive their meals at the Krishnaveni Auditorium. Furthermore, guests sent by the various local karas will dine at the Vinayaka Auditorium, ensuring every participant is honoured during the festival.
