Congress leader Pawan Khera has demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah provide a formal statement regarding the alleged police actions taken against youth protesters across India. Khera emphasised the necessity for Shah to respond to these allegations concerning the usage of force, particularly in Delhi, where incidents reportedly occurred.

In addition, Khera highlighted the need for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to comment on the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and the alleged misappropriation of donations intended for the Ayodhya Ram Temple. His remarks reflect broader concerns surrounding governance and accountability during a significant period.

Khera stated, “The issues are quite clear. We are trying to raise these demands inside the House: the Union Home Minister should come and make a statement.” He believes it is essential for Shah to clarify the government’s stance on these significant matters impacting youth and civil liberties.

Opposition Protests in Parliament

Earlier on August 5, opposition members, including prominent leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, participated in a protest march from the Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar within Parliament premises. This demonstration was against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stemming from his government’s handling of police action during a protest on July 20, led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).

The protestors are primarily vocalising concerns over alleged embezzlement relating to the Ayodhya Ram Mandir donations and the treatment of young demonstrators during the July protest. Khera’s call for Shah to address these allegations coincided with a growing demand for government accountability.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has reiterated the need for the central government to be held accountable for its actions against student protesters. She stated that public officials should bear full responsibility for the decisions leading to the deployment of force against citizens participating in rallies.

Demands for Transparency and Responsibility

Vadra remarked to reporters that India is meant to function as a democracy, not an authoritarian regime. She expressed serious concerns regarding the use of lathi charges and pellet guns against demonstrators. Her statements highlight the crucial role of transparency and responsibility in governance.

She further stated, “If incidents have occurred, if bullets have been fired at children, pellet guns have been used, tear gas has been deployed, or lathi charges have been ordered, then someone must be held accountable.” The call for accountability is growing louder amidst escalating tensions between the government and protesters.

In Parliament, discussions were disrupted as opposition parties sought answers from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the protest on July 20. Both Houses faced repeated adjournments due to the ongoing demands for clarity on the issue. The opposition’s concentrated efforts show a commitment to addressing the use of force by police forces during public protests.
