Pakistani Army Opens Fire on Protesters in Rawalakot, Resulting in 16 Deaths

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent announcement reports that Pakistani Army personnel opened fire on demonstrators in Rawalakot, resulting in at least 16 fatalities and over 37 injuries. This tragic event occurred during a large rally opposing rising prices and electricity tariffs, along with the alleged denial of basic political and economic rights. Eyewitnesses noted that the incident took place as tens of thousands gathered at Eidgah Ground on June 11, 2026, to voice their discontent with the worsening economic situation.

Government Response to Unrest

The unrest in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) has reached alarming levels, with protests intensifying in response to economic hardships and governance issues. Demonstrators have been demanding affordable electricity, subsidised staple goods, and increased political rights. In a bid to control the situation, authorities imposed internet restrictions in various regions, which only served to further incite anger among the populace. The government’s heavy-handed response has included a crackdown on protests, including the banning of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which has been at the forefront of the demonstrations.

Local accounts suggest that panic ensued during the shootings, as participants attempted to flee amidst the chaos. Medical facilities faced overwhelming challenges, struggling to accommodate the influx of those injured during the disturbance. The deadly incident has incited new waves of protests in several nearby towns, notably Khai Gala, where residents protested against what they perceive as government repression. Families, including women and children, have participated in the demonstrations, demanding justice for those who lost their lives.

Reports indicate that the death toll from ongoing protests across POK has reached 53 since unrest began on June 5, with the situation in Rawalakot being particularly grim. Protest organisers have faced severe consequences, with authorities reportedly offering a Rs 1 crore bounty for information leading to their arrest, raising concerns over civil liberties.

Continued Resistance from Protest Leaders

Despite the military’s actions, protest leaders have expressed their resolve to sustain their efforts, emphasising that citizens are merely seeking fundamental rights and economic relief. Following the violence, leaders reinforced their determination to continue advocating for change, asserting that their struggle is emblematic of the residents’ needs for basic services and rights.

During a recent address to supporters, Sardar Aman Khan stated that an unarmed citizenry seeking essential services such as healthcare, food, and employment is being labelled as “terrorists” by the Pakistan Army. He highlighted the perspectives of individuals in various provinces, including Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who perceive the military as the true source of terror within society.

Khan’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among residents of POK, who feel that the actions taken by the armed forces are mischaracterising their legitimate protests. Community leaders and activists continue to raise awareness about their plight, aiming to galvanise international support and recognition of their demands.

India has issued a strong condemnation regarding the shooting of civilians in Kashmir by Pakistani authorities. The Indian government described the incident as a “massacre,” pointing out the ongoing denial of fundamental rights to individuals in territories controlled by Pakistan. India has called on the international community to hold Pakistan accountable for the reported violence and to affirm the rights of the residents of POK, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
