Pakistan Women Experience Setback Before T20 World Cup with Ireland Tri-Series Results

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan Women encountered challenges in the Ireland tri-series, which served as preparation for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Their performance ultimately hindered their chance to compete in the final. On June 3, their match against the West Indies, led by Hayley Matthews, was cancelled due to rain, effectively ending their hopes of reaching the final.

The tri-series kicked off unfavourably for Pakistan, who were defeated by the West Indies by 25 runs. The following match against Ireland proved even more difficult, as they suffered a significant setback, losing by seven wickets after Ireland successfully chased down a total of 177 runs in just 19.1 overs.

With these defeats in mind, the team aimed to conclude the tri-series positively, looking forward to their final match against Ireland on June 4. The series results have raised concerns about the team’s readiness for the upcoming World Cup.

Competitive Batting Interrupted by Rain

In their recent match against the West Indies, Pakistan Women’s batting unit showed competitive spirit despite the weather disruptions. They elected to bat first at Castle Avenue and managed 111 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 16.5 overs before the rain intervened.

The innings commenced with promising intent, with Gull Feroza contributing 10 runs within a short time, hitting two boundaries before being dismissed. Ayesha Zafar added 17 runs from 15 balls, while Rameen Shamim provided 17 off 16, as the team attempted to rebuild after early losses.

Aliya Riaz played a crucial role in the middle order, scoring 24 runs and stabilising the innings. Her composure helped to maintain an appropriate run rate. Captain Fatima Sana remained unbeaten on 21 runs, supporting the team in navigating through challenging phases and ensuring that they kept the scoreboard ticking.

Focus Shifts to World Cup Preparation

Despite the rain that curtailed the match and left both teams sharing points, Pakistan Women faced disappointment in the Ireland tri-series. This outcome prompted them to concentrate on refining their team dynamics and strategies ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to begin on June 14.

To assist their preparations, Pakistan Women are scheduled to play two warm-up matches in Derby. They will face Sri Lanka Women on June 6, followed by a match with Scotland Women on June 9. These encounters present critical opportunities for the team to solidify their game plan and determine their best line-up.

As the World Cup approaches, Pakistan is positioned in Group B and will compete against India, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, South Africa, and Australia in the group stage. The opening match against India at Edgbaston in Birmingham is particularly anticipated, emphasizing the importance of effective preparation in the days leading up to the tournament.
