Pakistan Cricket Board Imposes Fine on National Team Following T20 World Cup Exit

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant move, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to penalize its national cricket team with a hefty fine of PKR 5 million (approximately Rs 16 lakh) per player, following their disappointing performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup. This decision comes in the wake of Pakistan’s inadequate results, which did not meet the expectations set by the board. President Mohsin Naqvi is reported to be leading this initiative, which reflects a change in how the PCB addresses failures in international competitions.

Sources within the PCB indicate that the leadership has reached a breaking point after several underwhelming performances in prominent International Cricket Council (ICC) events. The board’s stance emphasizes accountability, asserting that if players receive substantial financial rewards for victories, they must also face consequences for not achieving fundamental objectives in tournaments.

Timeline of Events During the T20 World Cup

The decision to impose fines was informally considered as early as the group stage of the tournament, following a crucial defeat against India. Attending the match in Colombo, Naqvi expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance, particularly their inability to manage pressure and critical tactical mistakes that led to their defeat.

Although Pakistan advanced to the Super 8 stage, this improvement over their previous T20 World Cup performance was overshadowed by their inability to build consistent momentum. They exited the tournament having secured only one victory from three matches, which included a narrow and unsatisfactory win against the Netherlands. A significant loss to India by 61 runs, a rain-affected match against New Zealand, and a decisive defeat against England effectively curtailed their hopes of reaching the semifinals. Their final match saw them achieve a win against Sri Lanka, but it was too late to alter their fate in the competition.

Player Accountability and Performance Critique

The fallout from this dismal showing has placed immense pressure on team captain Salman Ali Agha and former captain Babar Azam, with both facing criticism for the team’s performance. Agha acknowledged in post-match press conferences the struggles of the middle order, highlighting an over-reliance on players delivering individual performances to succeed.

Centrally contracted players in Pakistan benefit from substantial financial packages, including monthly retainers and shares from ICC revenue across various categories. However, none of the players were categorized in the prestigious top A category for the 2025-26 cycle. Despite their improved financial conditions, including earnings from the Pakistan Super League (PSL), concerns persist among officials regarding the lack of a corresponding enhancement in on-field results.

Individual Notable Performances

One of the few bright spots for Pakistan during the tournament was Farhan, who made a notable impact by breaking Virat Kohli’s 2014 record for the most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition. Farhan accumulated 383 runs at an average of 76.60, including two centuries, showcasing his prominence amid an otherwise disappointing outing for the team.
