Pakistan head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed has stated that he was unaware of any purported threat from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) concerning the boycott of the England tour due to a Sky Sports interview featuring the sons of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Sarfaraz affirmed that his focus remained on the ongoing second Test match at Lord’s. The issue came to light during the lunch break of the first day when the broadcast featured an interview with Kasim and Sulaiman Khan, who discussed their father’s health while incarcerated.

After the second day’s play, Sarfaraz asserted that neither he nor his players had any knowledge of the alleged dispute involving the PCB and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). He emphasised, “I don’t know anything. I’m just focusing on the match.” When asked about the possibility of Pakistan refusing to return for the afternoon session on the first day, he commented that the team was simply having lunch at that time.

According to reports, the PCB had considered cancelling the Lord’s Test and possibly abandoning the remainder of the three-match series if the interview aired. Sky Sports initially delayed the segment following a complaint but ultimately decided to broadcast the pre-recorded interview.

Details of the Sky Sports Interview

The interview was conducted by former England captain Michael Atherton, where Kasim and Sulaiman Khan expressed their worries regarding their father’s health, security, and conditions of his imprisonment. They also included critiques aimed at the UK government’s response to their father’s situation. Imran Khan, aged seventy-three, has been in custody since 2023 on charges of corruption, which he denies.

Imran Khan had a celebrated international cricket career lasting two decades and led Pakistan to its first men’s ODI World Cup victory in 1992. He served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 until 2022. The political aspects of this situation were compounded by the fact that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi also holds the position of Pakistan’s interior minister. As tensions escalated, the ECB sought advice from the UK government regarding the developing disagreement.

In Pakistan, the public broadcaster PTV refrained from showing the interview, opting instead to use Sky’s match footage for its own coverage. Despite the reported threat from the PCB, Pakistan returned to play after the lunch break on the first day, allowing the Test match to continue without any further interruptions. There were no additional complaints from Sky Sports understood on Friday.

Support for Imran Khan from Cricketing Community

Concerns regarding Imran Khan’s health and treatment have garnered significant support from various prominent individuals in the cricketing community. Recently, twenty-one former international captains, including notable figures such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, and Allan Border, expressed their appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging humane treatment and proper medical care for Khan.

This appeal gained further momentum following a ruling from Pakistan’s Supreme Court, which mandated a medical evaluation for Imran Khan and ordered his transfer to a hospital. Khan has been in custody since August 2023, with increasing worries about his eyesight and general health condition. Former Australian captain Greg Chappell raised concerns about the challenges posed by Khan’s prolonged isolation.

Most recently, Australia captain Pat Cummins added his voice in support, stating, “I hope the court-ordered medical assessment is allowed to proceed, and that family visits continue. Imran Khan deserves to be treated with dignity.” The growing advocacy from former cricketing peers has elevated the issue beyond individual concerns, transforming it into a wider collective appeal for Imran Khan’s healthcare and family access.
