Shoaib Akhtar Claims India’s Success Has ‘Ruined Cricket’ Following T20 World Cup Win

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s impressive victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup final has elicited strong reactions, particularly from the cricketing community in Pakistan. Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar made a notable statement, asserting that India’s ascent has negatively impacted the sport. In the final match held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India defeated New Zealand by a significant margin of 96 runs, securing their third T20 World Cup title. While numerous cricket analysts applauded India’s performance as clinical, Akhtar criticized their dominance during an appearance on the Tapmad show ‘Game On Hai,’ likening India to a ‘wealthy child’ monopolizing a neighborhood game.

Akhtar’s Comparisons and Reactions

“It’s similar to when there is one affluent child in a neighborhood who invites all the less fortunate kids to play cricket. This is how India operates, keeping four out of eight teams and advancing three of them, claiming victory,” Akhtar expressed. His remarks sparked considerable debate on social media, with mixed responses from fans, many labeling his comments as bitter in light of India’s decisive win. In a prior statement, however, Akhtar had acknowledged India’s status as favorites but expressed a desire for New Zealand to claim the title “for the sake of cricket,” hoping to see a competitive final.

Other Pakistani Cricketers Offer Criticism

Akhtar was not alone in his critical assessment following India’s triumph. Former cricketer Mohammad Amir also shared an unexpected perspective on the talk show ‘Harna Mana Hai.’ Amir contended that much of the responsibility for India’s success lay with New Zealand’s bowling unit, which he believed failed to exert sufficient pressure, thus allowing Indian batsmen to take control of the match. These comments reflect a broader discussion among cricket fans and experts regarding India’s commanding performance throughout the tournament.

India’s Journey to T20 World Cup Victory

India showcased one of their most complete performances in the final against New Zealand. Asked to bat first, the Indian top order demonstrated an aggressive approach, led by Sanju Samson, who scored 89 runs off 46 balls. Abhishek Sharma contributed with a rapid 52 runs from 21 deliveries, while Ishan Kishan continued his strong form with a quick 54 off 25 balls. Shivam Dube added a late flourish with an unbeaten 26 runs from just eight balls, propelling India to a total of 255 runs.

In their pursuit of this formidable target, New Zealand experienced a brief resurgence led by Tim Seifert, who scored 52 runs off 26 balls. However, India’s bowling unit soon took control of the game. Jasprit Bumrah delivered an exceptional bowling performance, taking 4 wickets for 15 runs, while Axar Patel claimed 3 wickets for 27 runs, dismantling the New Zealand batting lineup. India ultimately secured a 96-run victory, making history as the first team to defend the T20 World Cup successfully and the first host nation to win the trophy.
