Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar recently conducted an interactive session with students in Margao, Goa, where he addressed the significance of elections and the importance of being informed participants in the electoral process. This engagement took place on September 3 as part of an effort to enhance electoral literacy among young individuals.

During the event held at Ravindra Bhawan, Kumar emphasised the essential role that students play in the future of both Goa and India. He stated that these young minds represent the next generation of voters and their active involvement is crucial for the democratic fabric of the nation.

The session provided an opportunity for the students to gain practical insights into the electoral process. They were shown how polling and counting occur, alongside explanations of how the voter list is audited by political parties via their booth-level agents. This hands-on approach aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the procedures involved.

Conference on ELC & ECINET

The interaction was part of a broader Conference on Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELC) and the ECINET platform, designed to promote discussions about electoral participation among the youth. Kumar engaged young attendees in meaningful conversations about how to become actively involved citizens in the democratic process.

Kumar reiterated the significance of informed participation, stating that understanding how elections function is vital for young voters. The initiative was well received by students, who expressed enthusiasm regarding the opportunity to learn about their roles and responsibilities as future voters.

The Chief Election Commissioner highlighted that the electoral awareness initiative would play a pivotal role in enhancing civic knowledge and promoting participation in forthcoming elections.

Engagement with Booth Level Officers

Prior to the student interaction, Gyanesh Kumar met with over 1,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) from across Goa on September 2. This conference aimed to recognise the foundational role that BLOs play in the electoral process and to bolster their engagement efforts within communities.

Kumar referred to the BLOs as essential to the functioning of India’s democratic system. He underscored that the preparation of electoral rolls and the execution of elections are conducted in strict accordance with the Constitution, relevant laws, and guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Moreover, Kumar shared that the BLOs serve as the first point of contact between the Election Commission and the populace. Their engagement is vital in ensuring accurate voter lists and in facilitating a smoother electoral process for citizens.

In a previous engagement on August 27, the Chief Election Commissioner also addressed BLOs in Tamil Nadu during a similar regional conference. This event focused on sharing grassroots insights into electoral processes and enhancing the role of ELCs in fostering electoral awareness.

The ongoing efforts of the Election Commission aim to strengthen electoral literacy, promoting informed participation in the democratic process across the country. Such initiatives are instrumental in equipping future voters with the knowledge necessary to effectively exercise their rights.
