Pakistan Conducts Operation Killing 29 Militants After Karachi Rangers Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan’s security forces executed an intelligence-based ground operation near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, resulting in the death of twenty-nine militants. This action was confirmed by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, who referred to it as a response to recent militant assaults across the country. The operation was executed a day after an armed attack occurred at the Karachi regional headquarters of the paramilitary Rangers, culminating in the deaths of three soldiers.

During the Karachi assault, security forces successfully neutralised three attackers and captured another suspect, identified as an Afghan national. The attack was claimed by Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a faction that has split from the Pakistani Taliban, through a statement released following the incident.

Targeted Militant Groups

Following the incursions, the operation focused specifically on the hideouts of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar and a group known as Fitna al-Khwarij, a term used in Pakistan to refer to the Pakistani Taliban. Tarar reported that the initial ground operation took place in the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where a high-value target, identified as Khwarji Commander Khan Farosh, was killed along with three other militants. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by Pakistani security forces to dismantle militant networks in the area.

Intelligence indicated that additional strikes would be necessary. Consequently, precise targeting operations were conducted against terrorist camps and hideouts situated within Afghanistan’s Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces. These strikes reportedly resulted in the death of twenty-five militants, while large quantities of weapons and ammunition stored at the respective hideouts were also destroyed, according to Tarar.

Context of Rising Militancy

In recent years, Pakistan has experienced a marked increase in militant attacks, particularly against police and security personnel. The authorities have largely attributed this upsurge to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and similar groups. Although the TTP operates independently of the Afghan Taliban, the two organisations are allies. The latter regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, which has added complexity to the security situation in the region.

Tarar emphasised Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining regional stability, asserting that the nation’s priority is the safety and security of its citizens. Over the past year, Pakistan has conducted multiple military actions along the border and within Afghanistan, specifically targeting alleged hideouts belonging to the TTP and other militant factions. The Pakistani government has accused Afghanistan’s Taliban regime of providing sanctuary to militants responsible for violent acts within Pakistan, a claim that the Afghan authorities have repeatedly denied.

In summary, the recent operation resulted in the deaths of twenty-nine militants following a coordinated response to attacks targeting security forces. This situation reflects the broader challenges Pakistan faces from rising militancy in the region, particularly in the aftermath of the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan.
