“Our Party Workers Are Being Killed”: Dilip Ghosh After Murder of Suvendu Adhikari’s Aide

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent murder of Chandranath Rath, who served as the personal assistant to West Bengal’s Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, has raised serious concerns over law enforcement in the state. The incident occurred near Madhyamgram in the North 24 Parganas district late on Wednesday night, where Rath was reportedly shot and later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

Chandranath Rath, a former Indian Air Force personnel, was targeted, according to accounts from various political figures. His murder has sparked significant tension and calls for accountability within West Bengal’s policing agencies.

Following the murder, the West Bengal Police have stepped up their investigation efforts. Forensic teams have been deployed to the crime scene while the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is actively interviewing eyewitnesses and exploring leads connected to the case.

Political Reactions and Accusations

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh vehemently condemned the violence, asserting that party workers are being deliberately targeted. During a press interaction, Ghosh questioned the efficacy of law enforcement, claiming that police inaction is enabling continued violence against BJP affiliates.

Ghosh emphasised that the barometer for law and order in West Bengal appears to be failing, stating, “The police need to step up and perform their duty as they are meant to.” His remarks highlight the ongoing political friction in a state marred by violence and alleged political rivalry.

Suvendu Adhikari characterised Rath’s death as a “premeditated murder,” suggesting that the attack was orchestrated due to Rath’s association with him and his adversarial stance against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Adhikari claimed the attack was pre-planned, stating there had been surveillance on Rath before he was shot.

Calls for an Independent Investigation

In light of the incident, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has called for a court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, urging for a fair and thorough examination of the events leading to Rath’s murder. The demand underscores a desire for transparency amid allegations of political bias in local investigations.

This latest incident unfolds against a backdrop of previous political violence in West Bengal, further complicating the state’s political landscape. Speculation regarding the motives behind the murder continues, with various parties attempting to leverage the situation for political gain.

Ghosh’s comments extended beyond the homicide, as he also directed criticism at Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. Ghosh questioned Yadav’s claims regarding democracy in West Bengal, asking why there appeared to be a need for significant forces to oversee elections and why Banerjee frequently resorts to the judiciary.

Context of Political Tensions

Akhilesh Yadav recently spoke out about perceived issues surrounding electoral integrity, alleging that central forces compromised democracy in West Bengal. He stated that voters were denied their right to participate in the electoral process, attributing responsibility for these events to the central forces deployed during the elections.

In the previous assembly elections held in 2021, the BJP secured 207 seats while the TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, retained power with 80 seats. This electoral disparity has amplified discord between the parties and heightened tension in the aftermath of incidents like Rath’s murder.

The ramifications of this incident and the various political responses it has spurred may serve to intensify ongoing rivalries ahead of the next electoral contest in West Bengal, scheduled for 2026.
