The Bahuda Rath Yatra, also referred to as the ‘Return Car Festival’, attracted thousands of devotees to Puri on July 24. This significant event marks the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra from the Gundicha Temple back to the Jagannath Temple. The large influx of pilgrims was palpable as the atmosphere buzzed with devotion and excitement.

Unfortunately, some attendees reported health issues during the festival, prompting immediate medical intervention. Several devotees were taken to local medical facilities for treatment, highlighting the communal spirit that characterises the event.

The Odisha government took proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of attendees during the busy procession. Dedicated ambulance corridors were established, along with the deployment of temporary medical teams positioned at strategic locations along the route, enabling quick response to any medical emergencies.

Personal Testimonies from Devotees

A notable presence among the devotees was a Europe-born follower of Lord Jagannath, who currently resides in the Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mission Ashram Temple in Balasore district. Describing her spiritual experience during the festival, she expressed a profound sense of joy after observing the deities closely. She articulated, “I felt a deep sense of spiritual ecstasy, which cannot be described in words,” reflecting the emotional and communal significance of the event.

This highlights the diverse backgrounds of those participating in the festival, showcasing the universal appeal of Lord Jagannath and the deep connections worshippers form during these occasions.

The sense of community was further exemplified by the arrangements made by the Odisha government, with Minister Mukesh Mahaling addressing the crowd and commending the collaborative efforts to support the event’s smooth operation. He specifically acknowledged the contributions of various organisations in facilitating health and safety measures.

Government Support and Coordination

Minister Mahaling conveyed his best wishes to all devotees attending the festival, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring their welfare during such large gatherings. “The Health Department has organised a special arrangement today,” he stated, emphasizing the extensive preparations involved.

He elaborated on the medical preparedness in place, noting that temporary hospitals had been established, with medical personnel stationed on either side of the procession route. Minister Mahaling expressed his dedication to overseeing the initiatives in person, reaffirming the efforts put forth by local authorities to ensure the safety and health of festival-goers.

The Bahuda Yatra is more than just a religious event; it serves as one of the largest religious gatherings in India, evoking sentiments of faith, devotion, and unity. Millions from various parts of India and abroad united to participate in this centuries-old tradition, which represents significant elements of cultural heritage.

Earlier on the day of the Bahuda Rath Yatra, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the current titular King of Puri, performed the ceremonial Chhera Pahanra ritual. This ritual traditionally involves sweeping the deities’ chariots with a golden broom, marking a profound connection between the royal family and the religious ceremonies held in Puri.
