The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended another key suspect in the 2022 murder of Karnataka BJP leader Praveen Nettaru. This arrest, which took place on August 6, brings the total number of individuals arrested in the case to twenty-five. The suspect, identified as Ummar Farook MR, was reportedly found in Kochi, Keralam, following a targeted operation based on reliable intelligence.

According to the NIA, a Red Corner Notice and a non-bailable warrant had previously been issued against Farook. The agency had announced a reward of Rs 4 lakh for any information that could lead to his capture. Farook was allegedly named in a chargesheet for his involvement in the conspiracy surrounding Nettaru’s murder, facing multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Allegations of Conspiracy

The NIA’s investigation indicates that Farook participated in a conspiracy meeting at the office of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) located in Sullia town. This meeting reportedly included other accused individuals who are also part of the investigation. The agency has claimed that Farook agreed to provide his motorcycle to a co-accused to conduct reconnaissance in Bellare village prior to the murder.

Moreover, the NIA has accused Farook of participating in efforts to eliminate a protected witness related to the case, highlighting the gravity of the allegations against him. The systematic approach taken by the NIA aims to track further conspirators involved in this case.

This recent arrest follows the apprehension of two other absconding accused: Abdul Nasir P alias Nasir and Naushad. Both individuals were arrested in July during a coordinated operation involving information from the Andhra Pradesh Police, indicating ongoing efforts to dismantle the network surrounding the murder.

Background of the Murder Case

Praveen Nettaru, a local BJP leader from the Dakshina Kannada district, was murdered on July 26, 2022. The incident evoked significant public outcry, prompting the NIA to take over the investigation. Initial findings from the agency suggested that Nettaru’s murder was part of an organised criminal conspiracy led by cadres affiliated with the banned PFI.

As investigations continue, the NIA has reported that two accused individuals remain at large, with ongoing efforts to trace and apprehend them. The agency maintains a steadfast focus on bringing the investigation to a logical conclusion, seeking justice for the victim and accountability for all those involved.
