Recent heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh has resulted in at least nine fatalities, including four children and two infants, across multiple districts. The most severe incident occurred in Pratapgarh, where a nearly century-old house collapsed, leading to the deaths of six members from one family while they were sleeping.

This incident took place around 2 am in Mahuli Bazaar, located approximately three kilometres from the Pratapgarh district headquarters. The family was reportedly unaware of the impending danger as they rested within the structure when it caved in.

The deceased individuals were identified as Pramod Srivastava, aged sixty, his fifty-five-year-old wife Rita, their twenty-five-year-old son Nitin, and twenty-four-year-old daughter-in-law Madhuri, alongside Aman’s two children. Fortunately, Aman, the elder son aged twenty-eight, survived by crawling out from the rubble, managing to alert the neighbours promptly.

Details on Rescue Efforts

In the aftermath of the collapse, police, fire service personnel, and local residents promptly initiated a rescue operation to retrieve those trapped beneath the rubble. The injured individuals were swiftly transported to the government medical college; however, six were later declared deceased. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examinations, and further investigative measures are underway.

The local community is in shock following this tragic incident. Authorities have emphasised the need to assess the structural integrity of older buildings, particularly in light of the recent heavy rainfall. Local officials stated that they will be looking into similar structures in the area to prevent further disasters.

The gravity of the situation has prompted local leadership to call for improvements in housing safety standards, particularly for residences that may be vulnerable to weather-related incidents. The affected families and their community are being offered support during this difficult time.

Incidents in Barabanki and Saharanpur

Further rain-related tragedies were reported in Barabanki district, where two siblings lost their lives following the sudden collapse of an old brick wall. This incident occurred on Thursday morning in Aliyabad, as the children were reportedly playing in a village lane when the wall collapsed, trapping five children beneath the debris.

Circle Officer Saurabh Srivastava confirmed that local villagers promptly rescued the trapped children and transported them to the district hospital. Tragically, a seven-year-old boy and his fourteen-year-old sister were declared dead upon arrival. Three other children sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care.

The local community has raised concerns about the condition of the wall, with several villagers alleging that it had deteriorated over time and weakened due to the ongoing rainfall. In response, officials have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the wall’s collapse to determine liability and ensure safety measures are taken.

In a separate incident in Saharanpur, a thirty-five-year-old woman lost her life when her mud house collapsed amid heavy rain on Wednesday night in Ghaghreki village. Station House Officer Devesh Kumar Sharma reported that local residents and police managed to extricate the woman from the debris; however, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at a primary health centre. Her remains have also been sent for postmortem examination.
