The Police Special Task Force alongside riot control units was deployed to restore order in the prison environment.

Nature Of The Violence

Preliminary investigations suggest that the violent outbreak involved two rival groups of inmates. One faction is suspected of supporting drug trafficking operations within the prison, while the opposing group reportedly advocated against such illegal activities. To mitigate further violence, law enforcement has taken measures to transfer three inmates to the Pallansena Prison Camp as part of the containment strategy.

According to AC Gajanayake, the Media Spokesman for the Prisons Department, a special investigation has been initiated regarding the incident. Gajanayake confirmed that a dedicated investigative team has been assembled following directives from the Commissioner General of Prisons to probe into the underlying causes and events surrounding the unrest. Concurrently, a separate police investigation is also under way to ascertain the facts of the situation.

In light of these developments, Minister of Justice Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara has requested a comprehensive report detailing the circumstances involving the clashes at Negombo Prison. A magisterial inquiry was initiated on Sunday, and authorities are persistently working to manage the aftermath of the unrest while determining effective measures to prevent future occurrences.
