In a recent interview marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the iconic film Dil Chahta Hai, director Farhan Akhtar revealed that Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan were not his initial selections for the leading roles. Akhtar shared that his original choices included Akshaye Khanna, Hrithik Roshan, and Abhishek Bachchan. Ultimately, while Akshaye was the only actor from this initial list to join the project, even his character underwent changes before the casting was finalised.

Farhan Akhtar, who made his directorial debut with this film, explained that he originally approached Akshaye for the lead role of Akash, which eventually went to Aamir Khan. Interestingly, Aamir was first considered for the character of Siddharth, a part that was later played by Akshaye. This switch in roles highlights the evolving discussions surrounding the film’s casting process.

The Casting Process Unveiled

During the interview, Farhan elaborated on the casting dynamics. He stated that Akshaye was his preferred choice for Akash, but once Aamir expressed interest in portraying that role, the conversation took a different turn. Aamir reportedly indicated his desire to play Akash instead of Siddharth, stating that he found the script appealing but wished for the more light-hearted character.

This revelation created a dilemma for Farhan, who returned to Akshaye to discuss Aamir’s interest in the film. Akshaye was enthusiastic about being involved, regardless of the role. He conveyed his willingness to take on any character, affirming, “I just want to do the film. You make me Sameer, make me Sid, make me anything.” This open-mindedness allowed for the trio of actors to finally take shape.

In this manner, the casting was finalised with Aamir playing Akash, Saif Ali Khan portraying Sameer, and Akshaye taking on the role of Siddharth. The eventual ensemble became synonymous with the film’s depiction of friendship and camaraderie.

Legacy of Dil Chahta Hai

Released on August 10, 2001, Dil Chahta Hai portrayed the lives of three close friends navigating love and adulthood while experiencing shifting dynamics in their relationships. The film was set against an urban backdrop and was noted for its authentic dialogue, subtle emotions, and a modern aesthetic that resonated with a younger audience. Produced on a reported budget of Rs 14 crore, the film was a commercial success, garnering Rs 20.02 crore nett in India and approximately Rs 39.72 crore worldwide, as per Box Office India. The movie’s impact was significant enough to earn Farhan Akhtar the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
