More TMC Leaders Likely to Resign Following Koel Mallick’s Exit, Says Ritabrata Banerjee

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Ritabrata Banerjee, has stated that additional members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) may resign following the recent departure of Rajya Sabha MP Koel Mallick. He alleged that a climate of dictatorship and authoritarianism within the party has stifled internal discourse. This statement came shortly after Mallick’s resignation, which Banerjee characterised as indicative of the broader dysfunction within the TMC.

Banerjee expressed concerns about the detrimental impact of what he referred to as “dictatorship, fascism, and authoritarianism” on the democratic fabric of the party. He noted that prior resignations, including those of colleagues Buluda, Sukhendu Shekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Baraik, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), signalled an ongoing trend of discontent among party members.

He further claimed that the party’s operational dynamics favour “monologue” over essential dialogue, asserting that this could lead to additional exits. Banerjee articulated that many within TMC might become emboldened to resist the prevailing monologue, thereby fostering a push for dialogue. He suggested that a historical pattern indicates that dialogue triumphs over monologue, and he anticipates that more members will join what he referred to as a rebellion against the party’s current governance.

Details of Rukmini Koel Mallick’s Resignation

Mallick reportedly met Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan earlier on the same day she resigned, formally submitting her resignation from the Upper House. This event has added to the mounting speculation about instability within the TMC, particularly following recent defections of notable party members to the BJP. The earlier resignations of Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Baraik had already heightened concerns about the TMC’s internal cohesion.

Following her resignation, Mallick’s actions were clarified by TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, who mentioned that the MP had communicated her intentions to the party leadership prior to her formal resignation. Banerjee also indicated that there is ongoing communication with those who have chosen to leave the party. In a statement, she suggested that individuals feeling pressured should make their decisions before the upcoming Shaheed Diwas rally on July 21.

Banerjee’s remarks included a warning to potential defectors, outlining the constitutional rights that grant individuals the freedom to make their own political choices. Her comments reflect a degree of resignation to the ongoing challenges facing the TMC, while also emphasising her leadership role in maintaining the party’s integrity in the face of dissent.

Upcoming Rally and Political Dynamics

The TMC is preparing for a significant rally commemorating ‘Shaheed Diwas’, which honours 13 Youth Congress workers who died in police firing during protests in 1993 under the Left Front administration. Banerjee has requested that the state administration remain neutral during this event, especially as the party aims to address the alleged murders of TMC workers amid post-poll violence in West Bengal.

As the July 21 rally approaches, Banerjee expressed her intention to conduct the event peacefully and in accordance with court directives. She underscored the importance of the administration’s neutrality, warning that any unrest at the national level could ripple through West Bengal.

In light of the ongoing challenges and setbacks, Banerjee has expressed confidence in her ability to rejuvenate the TMC if necessary, referencing her past experiences in revitalising the party. Her determination to navigate the current political landscape reflects her awareness of the complexities present within the TMC amid increasing tensions and discontent among party ranks.
