Monsoon Showers Expected on Thursday as IMD Issues Rain Warning

The CSR Journal Magazine

The southwest monsoon is reportedly continuing its progression across India, with significant expansion into various regions on Wednesday. Areas including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand have seen increased rainfall, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has also indicated the likelihood of heavy rainfall in multiple regions and persistent heatwave conditions affecting parts of north and east India on June 25.

Current meteorological conditions appear favourable for further monsoon movement into the remaining areas of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar over the next two to three days. The monsoon rain-bearing system is anticipated to advance into portions of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand later in the week.

For June 25, widespread rainfall activity is projected across central, eastern, and peninsular India. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in Odisha, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. Northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, are also expected to witness considerable rainfall.

Impact of Recent Weather Activity

Maharashtra is expected to be among the regions most affected, with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted for its coastal areas. Additionally, Telangana and coastal Karnataka are also on alert for substantial rainfall. This forecast follows a period of intense weather across the country, where extremely heavy rainfall was reported in coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, on Tuesday. Very heavy rainfall was also recorded in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Madhya Maharashtra, and Mizoram.

Other regions, such as central India, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and parts of the Northeast, have also experienced heavy showers. Thunderstorms, coupled with gusty winds, are expected to persist across many areas. Rajasthan is currently under an orange alert due to predicted thunderstorm activities, while yellow and orange alerts have been issued for several states across northwest, central, and eastern India.

Despite the advancement of the monsoon, heatwave conditions are forecasted to linger over eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and northeastern Madhya Pradesh on June 25. The IMD has cautioned that daytime temperatures may remain significantly above normal in these locations until rainfall advances further north and east.

Factors Contributing to Active Weather Conditions

Meteorologists have attributed these weather patterns to a combination of several atmospheric systems currently impacting India. This includes a cyclonic circulation over central Madhya Pradesh, another system over Assam and adjoining Bangladesh, a trough extending from southeast Rajasthan to the east-central Arabian Sea, and a western disturbance affecting Haryana.

Looking ahead, the IMD expects rainfall activity to further intensify, particularly in northeastern India. There is a distinct possibility of extremely heavy rainfall, with totals exceeding 21 cm anticipated over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on June 27 and 28. As the monsoon gains momentum, it is expected to influence more areas of northern India by the weekend.

This forecast underscores the dynamic nature of India’s climate during the monsoon season, highlighting the need for preparedness in light of possible extreme weather conditions. Residents in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for potential disruptions due to heavy rainfall and strong winds.
