PM Modi and Trump Likely to Meet at G7 Summit in France to Discuss Trade Issues

The CSR Journal Magazine

As global leaders gear up for the G7 summit in France next month, a prospective meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump is generating significant interest. This interaction is expected to focus on unresolved trade matters between the two nations.

Robinder Sachdev, an expert on foreign issues, highlighted the likelihood of this informal meeting. He stated, “If Trump is present and Prime Minister Modi is there, the chances of a pull-aside are notably high for various reasons.” The anticipated dialogue is deemed critical for advancing bilateral relations.

Challenges in India-US Trade Negotiations

A key agenda item during the possible meeting is the stalled trade negotiations between India and the United States. Sachdev remarked, “The trade deal has yet to be finalised, and it is currently in limbo due to complications on the American side.” He elaborated that recent tariffs imposed by Trump have further complicated these negotiations.

Sachdev pointed out that while some sanctions have been rescinded, there remains uncertainty regarding the future of tariffs. He believes a direct conversation between Modi and Trump could foster a deeper understanding and resolve outstanding issues in the trade relationship.

Beyond trade, this meeting is expected to signify a vital movement toward enhancing strategic cooperation in the region, particularly as India prepares to host the Quad summit later this year.

Implications for the Indo-Pacific Strategy

The interaction between Modi and Trump in France is viewed as an important step towards strengthening broader Indo-Pacific alignments. With the Quad summit on the horizon, Sachdev noted that diplomatic efforts are already being mobilised to set the stage effectively.

Preliminary visits, such as that of Marco Rubio, are interpreted as potential groundwork for the anticipated Modi-Trump meeting. This engagement is expected to lay the foundation for the Quad summit’s agenda and future collaborations among partner nations.

Furthermore, the meeting could facilitate discussions on a range of critical global challenges. Sachdev indicated the leaders may address pressing multilateral issues, such as the ongoing Gulf War and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, he stressed that the primary focus will aim to balance the evolving relationship between the United States and India.
