MCD Suspends Two Engineers Following Building Collapse Near Saket Metro Station

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken disciplinary action against two engineers in its Building Department in the wake of a tragic building collapse in Said-ul-Azaib, located near Saket Metro Station. This action comes as the confirmed death toll related to the incident has risen to six. Officials from MCD announced the suspensions on Sunday, May 31.

Following the collapse, which occurred in the early hours of May 30, Deputy Commissioner of the South Zone ordered the immediate suspension of Junior Engineer Aman Jain and Assistant Engineer Sudesh Singh Chouhan. Reports state that their suspensions are linked to allegations of negligence in their professional duties that contributed to the crisis.

The building, which was located at Gali No. 5, Western Marg, was reported to have fallen in a densely populated area at approximately 8 am. The suspensions reflect concerns surrounding potential lapses in oversight that may have led to the hazardous situation.

Search and Rescue Operations Ongoing

As rescue efforts continue at the site, multiple agencies are involved in searching for those still trapped beneath the rubble. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has stated that they have successfully rescued seven individuals from the site so far. Among them, four were found alive, while three were reported to be in an unconscious state.

According to statements from the NDRF, operations involved methods specific to collapsed structures and ongoing monitoring of the site for additional victims. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of both rescuers and remaining individuals trapped under debris.

Delhi Police confirmed that the death toll stands at six, as extensive rescue operations are underway. The authorities have mobilised resources from various departments to ensure the best possible outcome for those affected and are closely monitoring the situation as it develops.

Reactions from Government Officials and Ongoing Investigations

Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu expressed his condolences regarding the tragic loss of life associated with the collapse. In a post shared on X, he conveyed his dismay over the incident, highlighting the need for immediate medical attention for the injured. His remarks included an assurance of full support for the ongoing rescue efforts.

Sandhu noted that a multi-agency approach was being implemented to manage the rescue and relief efforts effectively. He emphasised that proper medical assistance and relief measures are being put in place for affected individuals and their families, showcasing the administration’s commitment to addressing the crisis comprehensively.

In addition to the suspensions announced, an extensive inquiry into the root causes of the collapse is in progress. The aim is to ascertain the factors that contributed to the structural failure and to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The inquiry will also evaluate the effectiveness of supervision and compliance with safety regulations in construction practices in the area.
