Mamata Banerjee Seeking Support Because Her Strength Has “Faded”: Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has publicly accused Mamata Banerjee, the chief of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), of seeking alliances with parties she previously sought to undermine. He expressed this sentiment during an interaction with ANI on May 10, pointing out that her call for support reflects a decline in her political strength.

Chowdhury articulated that the ongoing post-poll violence in West Bengal can be traced back to the current administration’s management. He stated, “All the violence in Bengal during Mamata Banerjee’s rule will now have consequences,” suggesting that her efforts to weaken both Congress and secular entities in the state have backfired on her.

Furthermore, he proposed that Banerjee should publicly acknowledge Rahul Gandhi as the leader of the INDIA alliance before any dialogue regarding support could commence. This suggestion was aimed at enabling any considerations of collaboration from Congress’s side.

Banerjee’s Claims of Election Injustices

On the previous day, Banerjee raised concerns over her inability to secure permission for the Rabindra Jayanti celebrations in Kolkata. She claimed that such permission had been denied at three different venues, leading her to host the event at her residence instead. Banerjee alleged that decorators were instructed not to assist with the celebrations, calling on like-minded parties to unite against the BJP.

In light of the recent state elections, in which the BJP secured 207 of the 294 assembly seats, Banerjee has staunchly asserted that she will not resign following the results. The TMC’s representation fell to 80 seats, a situation she described as an outcome of fraudulent activities led by the Election Commission of India, alleging that votes were “looted” across approximately 100 constituencies.

She further claimed that numerous TMC offices were “hijacked” during the electoral process, indicating a systemic attempt to undermine her party’s success. Despite the losses, Banerjee expressed her belief that the TMC had achieved a moral victory over the BJP.

Response to Electoral Results and Future Actions

Banerjee expressed a resolve to continue her political fight, describing the newfound solidarity within the INDIA bloc following the election results in Bengal. Addressing party members, she conveyed her intention to wear black clothing on the first day of the Assembly, symbolising her continued struggle.

In a somewhat defiant tone, she stated, “Let them dismiss me. I want this to be a black day. We have to be strong.” She vowed to remove those within her party whom she perceives to have betrayed her leadership. Banerjee reiterated her stance that although the TMC may have lost the election, their fight is far from over.

According to sources within the TMC, she remains steadfast in her accusations against the central government, implicating both the Home Minister and the Prime Minister in what she described as orchestrated efforts to diminish her party’s influence. The TMC leader’s remarks underscore her commitment to contesting the electoral fallout and maintaining her position in West Bengal politics.
