The CSR Journal Magazine

A Manipur police officer was fatally stabbed during an anti-drug operation in the Thoubal district, with the alleged attacker taken into custody shortly after the incident. Officials reported that the attack occurred on the night of June 3, 2026, during a raid in the Moijing Khongkok area.

During the operation, police commando teams detained Md. Naobi, aged 25, along with another individual. While being interrogated about drug-related activities, Md. Naobi reportedly launched a sudden attack on Khoirom Suresh, inflicting severe injuries with a knife. Following the assault, the accused fled the scene.

Khoirom Suresh was promptly taken to the district hospital but was declared dead around 9.15 pm that evening due to the critical nature of his injuries. The incident marked a tragic escalation of violence amid ongoing drug enforcement efforts in the region.

Arrest of Suspect

Following the stabbing, authorities initiated extensive search operations in the area. The main suspect, Md. Naobi, was apprehended early on June 4, 2026, at approximately 8.45 am by police. Investigators are confident that prompt actions contributed to the rapid capture of the accused.

The swift arrest reflects the commitment of local law enforcement to address illegal drug activities in Manipur. Officials have been vocal about the need for increased safety measures for police personnel engaged in such high-risk operations.

Upon his arrest, Md. Naobi was reported to be cooperative with the authorities. Police have stated that they are exploring all angles of the case to ensure thorough prosecution of the suspects involved in the fatal incident.

Reactions to the Incident

The death of Khoirom Suresh has prompted a wave of sorrow and outrage among both the public and officials. Former Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, expressed his condolences, stating he was “deeply anguished and disturbed” by the loss of the police officer during the operation. His post on X highlighted the severe implications of drug-related violence in the society.

Biren Singh emphasised the need for harsh penalties for those responsible for such acts of violence, describing the incident as not merely tragic but also shameful for the community. This sentiment reflects a growing concern over the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking and related crimes in the region.

As investigations continue, there are ongoing discussions about enhancing security protocols and support mechanisms for police engaged in similar operations. The state government is under pressure to ensure that police officers are adequately protected while they work to uphold law and order amid rising drug-related crime.
