The Maharashtra Local Body Elections 2025 delivered a strong signal for the state’s political landscape. The Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, won 218 of the 288 contested seats, dealing a severe blow to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

BJP alone secured 127 seats, emerging as the largest and decisive party within the alliance. Its partners, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), won 54 and 37 seats respectively, consolidating Mahayuti’s dominance in urban and semi-urban areas.

MVA Struggles to Make an Impact

The opposition MVA could manage only 47 seats, highlighting its declining influence. Congress led the tally within the alliance with 31 seats, while Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction) managed just 9, and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) won 7 seats.

Other parties and independents claimed 23 seats. Analysts interpret these results as a semi-final test ahead of the upcoming BMC and 28 municipal corporation elections, scheduled for January 15-16, 2026, across 2,869 seats with 3.48 crore voters.

Key Wins Across Districts

In individual municipal councils, BJP candidates triumphed in Tuljapur, Naldurg, Murum, and Phaltan, while Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) retained control in Umarga, Kalamb, and Paranda. Notably, NCP’s Ajit Pawar secured victories in Daund and Baramati, with Jai Patil winning his fourth consecutive term in Baramati Municipal Council. Some local alliances also made a mark, notably in Bhum Municipal Council, reflecting regional group influence despite national party dominance.

Family Ties Boost Early Leads

Relatives of senior leaders significantly influenced results in several councils. BJP candidates with familial connections to MLAs and ministers led in early trends in Akkalkot, Dhamangaon, Murtizapur, Shirpur, and Pusad, underscoring the continued role of political networks in local body polls.
