Lufthansa Group Welcomes Visa-Free Airport Transit For Indian Nationals Via Germany

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Lufthansa Group has expressed its approval of the recent decision made by the Federal Republic of Germany to eliminate airport transit visa requirements for Indian citizens. This new policy, which came into effect on 3 June 2026, aims to facilitate smoother travel for Indian passengers transiting through German airports to other countries. The German Embassy in New Delhi announced this significant change, underlining its potential to enhance the efficiency of air travel.

Expanded Services and Investment

Currently, the Lufthansa Group operates over seventy weekly flights connecting India and Europe, showcasing its long-standing presence in the Indian aviation market for over sixty years. The airline is marking its hundredth anniversary by reinforcing its commitment to India through ongoing investments and expansion of its network. Such initiatives include the introduction of Lufthansa’s award-winning Allegris cabins on additional Boeing 787-9 services from Delhi and Hyderabad.

As part of its growth strategy, Lufthansa is also launching SWISS’s inaugural direct service between Bengaluru and Zurich in the upcoming 2026 Winter schedule. Additionally, there will be a rollout of FOX (Future Onboard Experience) across all long-haul cabins, aiming to offer passengers enhanced comfort, choice, and individualised service. This initiative seeks to redefine the experience of long-haul travel and create memorable moments for travellers.

To accommodate the increasing demand for air travel, both Lufthansa and SWISS are augmenting their capacities. This includes extra SWISS A330 flights between Delhi and Zurich and improved Airbus A380 services between Mumbai and Munich. These enhancements illustrate the airlines’ responsiveness to the growing need for connectivity and support for passengers travelling between India and Europe.

Germany’s Strategic Role in Air Connectivity

India has emerged as the largest intercontinental market for the Lufthansa Group within the Asia-Pacific region, marking its importance in the group’s global network. The introduction of visa-free airport transit for Indian nationals is anticipated to simplify overall travel processes and further strengthen Germany’s position as a pivotal gateway for passengers flying between India, Europe, and other regions worldwide. This policy is expected to significantly enhance air connectivity and travel accessibility for Indian citizens.

The Lufthansa Group is committed to using this opportunity to bolster its operations within India by continuing to enhance its services and networks. The planned expansions and upgrades reflect an enduring partnership between the airline and its Indian clientele, rooted in a shared vision of improving global air travel experiences.

The changes announced will likely have a positive impact on both leisure and business travellers, promoting greater ease of movement for Indian nationals. The Lufthansa Group continues to respond to the growing needs of its passengers by adapting its offerings to create a more integrated travel experience involving Germany as a transit point. Overall, these developments demonstrate the airline’s dedication to fostering stronger ties between India and Europe through the enhanced convenience of air travel.
