Uttar Pradesh Man Allegedly Strangles Daughter Over Marriage Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

A man from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, allegedly killed his 24-year-old daughter for marrying contrary to his family’s wishes. The accused, Vimal Sharma, was apprehended by local police following the incident on August 1, 2026. Reports indicate that the victim, Ankita, had entered into a court marriage with Amit Pachauri, an Indian Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) soldier, approximately four months prior to the tragic event.

After their wedding, Pachauri returned to his posting, while Ankita remained at her parents’ residence. Tensions within the family reportedly intensified over the marriage, with the father expressing his discontent regarding the union. According to police accounts, Vimal Sharma confronted Ankita on the night of the incident, leading to a violent altercation.

During the confrontation, it has been reported that Sharma assaulted his daughter before using a scarf to strangle her. Witnesses stated that his wife and son were present in the home during the occurrence. Following the attack, Vimal allegedly instructed them to leave and chose to remain beside Ankita’s body.

Neighbour’s Response and Police Action

Neighbours of the Sharma family reported hearing screams emanating from the residence late that night. Initially, they assumed the sounds were part of a domestic dispute but grew increasingly concerned as the noise intensified. When attempts to knock on the door went unanswered and the lights inside the house were turned off, the neighbours took action by contacting local authorities.

As part of their investigation, the police interrogated Vimal Sharma, who reportedly confessed to the crime. He expressed his anger towards Ankita’s decision to marry without familial approval and claimed he had made numerous attempts to persuade her to reconsider the relationship. Such domestic issues have been a growing concern in the region, with law enforcement keen to address underlying factors contributing to such violent incidents.

Legal Proceedings and Societal Implications

Vimal Sharma has been charged in connection with his daughter’s death and is currently in police custody as the investigation unfolds. Legal experts indicate that cases like this often reflect broader societal issues, including the pressures surrounding arranged marriages and familial honour in conservative regions. Local activists have called for more comprehensive measures to combat domestic violence and protect the rights of women in similar situations.

Authorities emphasise the importance of addressing these cultural challenges while ensuring that justice is served in cases of domestic violence and murder. Public discussions around the issue may foster a better understanding of the rights individuals hold in marital decisions, particularly against the backdrop of societal expectations.

The latest incident raises questions about the necessity for societal change regarding marriage customs, and it highlights the possible need for supportive measures to assist individuals facing familial opposition. Policymakers are urged to consider legislative reforms that can protect victims while educating communities about these critical issues.
