Prashant Kishor, the newly elected MLA and founder of the Jan Suraaj party, asserted that the results of the Bankipur Assembly bypoll convey a clear message from the electorate of Bihar to the BJP and NDA leadership. He alleged that the voters have demonstrated their disapproval of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary due to his “conduct, character and face.” Speaking to ANI on August 4, following the announcement of the bypoll results, Kishor indicated that the outcome signifies widespread dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the BJP in Bihar, rather than a direct demand for a government change.

Kishor emphasised that the victory hinges on local concerns and dissatisfaction with the BJP’s leadership. He pointed out that the recent win in Bankipur should compel the ruling party to reconsider their approach and prioritise promises made during their rise to power. According to Kishor, the rhetoric surrounding crime and violence must be replaced with discussions focussed on crucial societal issues, such as education and employment.

Touching upon the significance of the bypoll results, Kishor expressed astonishment at the BJP’s defeat in a constituency they had won by over 51,000 votes in the previous Assembly elections held in November. He questioned what had transpired during that period to cause such a shift in public sentiment, suggesting that local grievances had persistently remained unaddressed.

Criticism of Current Leadership

Kishor criticises the leadership of Samrat Choudhary, arguing that the BJP had installed a figure representative of the very “Jungle Raj” politics that they previously campaigned against. According to him, the party has seated an individual embodying the same political issues that drove voters to support an alternative in the past. He asserted that voters will not accept this shift, leading to their decision to vote against the BJP in Bankipur.

Despite the loss, Kishor dismissed speculation regarding any immediate governmental changes, asserting that the NDA retains a clear majority in the Bihar Assembly. He maintained that while the government remains stable for the next four years, a change in leadership is imperative. Kishor reiterated that the NDA holds a majority and posited that the focus should be on enhancing leadership rather than contemplating a new government altogether.

In his remarks on the role of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Kishor suggested that the Opposition Leader’s future will depend on his ability to perform effectively in the coming years. Kishor stated that people’s perceptions of Yadav’s role will be dictated by his actions as the Leader of the Opposition, indicating the importance of robust opposition work in determining political trajectories.

Implications for Bihar Politics

Kishor further indicated that the Bankipur bypoll result should serve as a call to action for the BJP’s central leadership. He expressed a desire for increased attention to Bihar from prominent party figures, requesting the appointment of a capable and virtuous leader as Chief Minister. He articulated the need for political discussions to focus on pressing topics like education and employment rather than divisive rhetoric.

This electoral outcome follows significant youth-led protests regarding exam paper leaks and high unemployment rates, signalling potential shifts in political dynamics across Bihar. As Bankipur historically served as a BJP stronghold since 1995 and was recently vacated by BJP National President Nitin Nabin, Kishor’s triumph marks a significant milestone for the Jan Suraaj party. He won by a margin of 19,324 votes, reflecting a notable electoral trend in Bihar’s urban enclaves.
