Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a journey from New Delhi to Jaipur aboard the Vande Bharat train on August 12, 2026, to attend the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meetings. During the trip, she interacted with fellow passengers, fostering a dialogue on numerous pertinent topics.

Accompanying the Finance Minister were two postgraduate students pursuing media studies and two young media professionals. Their presence provided a unique platform for exchanging ideas on geopolitics, economic challenges, and issues affecting the youth today.

The open discussion allowed the young participants to engage with the Union Finance Minister directly, enriching their understanding of national and global issues. The engagement underscored the importance of youth involvement in national discourse.

BRICS FMCBG Meetings

The upcoming BRICS FMCBG meetings aim to facilitate discussions among finance and economic officials from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The meetings are expected to address various economic challenges and opportunities facing the member countries, emphasising cooperation and sustainability.

Throughout her journey, Sitharaman actively sought insights from the young passengers. This engagement reflects her commitment to connecting with younger generations and valuing their perspectives, particularly on matters of economic policy and governance.

The interaction also offered a glimpse into the broader objectives of the BRICS framework, highlighting the collaborative approach needed to tackle pressing global economic issues. The dialogue between the young media professionals and the Finance Minister is indicative of the inclusive approach being promoted within public policy discussions.

Upcoming Conclave on Financial Strategies

Following the BRICS meetings, the Ministry of Finance has scheduled a two-day conclave in New Delhi on August 17-18, 2026, aimed at public sector banks and financial institutions. This gathering will focus on deposit mobilisation, financing investment cycles, and addressing key challenges within the banking sector.

Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, along with Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, will lead the event. The conclave intends to create a collaborative environment for participants to share established practices and explore practical initiatives that could enhance the banking ecosystem in India.

Topics of discussion will span seven thematic tracks, including strategies for deposit mobilisation, banking initiatives tailored for youth, and enhancing agricultural infrastructure. The discussions seek to identify methods for strengthening credit access and stimulating the investment cycle to ensure timely infrastructure project execution.

Approximately 125 participants are expected to join the conclave. This includes prominent figures such as chairmen and managing directors from various public sector banks, as well as representatives from significant financial institutions like NABARD and SIDBI. The gathering aims to spur innovative ideas that translate policy interventions into tangible benefits for the population at large.
