BMC Removes 1,800 Tonnes of Waste From Juhu Beach After High Tides

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully cleared approximately 1,800 metric tonnes of waste from Juhu beach in Mumbai over the past ten days. This extensive cleanup effort comes in response to a significant increase in waste washed ashore after heavy rainfall impacted the area. The civic authority noted that the beach is now facing an influx of nearly 350 metric tonnes of refuse daily, which substantially exceeds the typical amount of 60 metric tonnes observed under normal weather conditions.

The recent surge in waste has raised concerns about cleanliness and the city’s preparedness for the monsoon season. Viral videos showing large piles of trash at Juhu beach circulated on social media, prompting immediate action from the municipal authorities. The BMC attributes the unprecedented accumulation of garbage to more than 1,000 mm of rainfall experienced in the first week of July, which led to excessive amounts of debris being flushed into the Arabian Sea from local drains and waterways.

According to the BMC, the tidal currents have carried significant amounts of this floating waste back to the beach, necessitating an urgent response. In light of the situation, the municipal body has intensified its cleaning operations to address the rising levels of waste.

Ongoing Cleanup Operations

In response to the increasing volume of waste, the BMC has maintained round-the-clock cleaning operations. The corporation reported that it is currently removing close to 180 metric tonnes of garbage daily by deploying additional resources and machinery specifically for this purpose. The civic body has made it clear that all collected waste is being transported for proper scientific disposal.

Officials stated that their efforts are focused on rapidly managing the waste issue to restore the beach to its normal state. Despite adverse weather conditions, the BMC continues to monitor the situation closely and has prioritised cleaning operations to effectively tackle the waste accumulation.

Alongside routine measures, the local government is exploring additional preventive strategies to reduce future waste inflow onto the beach. The implementation of these measures is seen as essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of Juhu beach as a public recreational area.

Political Reactions and Future Strategies

In response to the situation, Mumbai BJP chief and MLA Amit Satam convened with BMC officials at the beach to assess ongoing cleaning efforts. He asserted that more manpower and machinery have been assigned to expedite the removal of waste. Satam advocated for the installation of trash booms at key drainage points to hinder waste from entering the sea.

The BMC, recognised as Asia’s richest municipal body, has declared its commitment to resolving the waste issue urgently. Aspects of ongoing monitoring and effective cleaning will remain in focus until waste levels return to normal. This proactive stance illustrates the civic body’s dedication to maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of Mumbai’s coastal areas.
