The Lok Sabha experienced ongoing disruptions on July 24 as Opposition members gathered in the Well of the House, despite repeated requests from the Chair for calm. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the government was prepared for discussions over recent controversies surrounding the NEET examination. Excessive protests from the Opposition prevented the House’s proceedings from continuing, leading to an adjournment until 11 am on Monday.

Rijiju addressed the House amidst the tumult, urging the Opposition to engage in meaningful dialogue. He reiterated, “The Prime Minister has given his assurance, and we all believe that a discussion regarding NEET should take place.” His comments followed the conclusion of a hunger strike by Sonam Wangchuk, who had been advocating for deeper discussions on the issue.

In an earnest appeal directed at Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Rijiju questioned the refusal of the Opposition to engage productively. He indicated that imposing conditions for discussion, such as the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, was counterproductive. “I do not understand why we can’t have a good discussion on this on the 5th day of Parliament,” Rijiju stated.

Government’s Position on NEET and Legislation

The allegations surrounding the NEET-UG examination have sparked considerable unrest, prompting Rijiju to assure that the government is committed to addressing the issues. He noted that Prime Minister Modi had indicated strict legislation will be introduced to handle exam paper leaks, which would be discussed in a cabinet meeting scheduled for 1 pm that day. This announcement has drawn attention in light of an increase in protests led by various student organisations across the country.

Rijiju explained, “PM Modi has announced his commitment to introducing strict laws related to exam leaks.” The cabinet is expected to deliberate on a draft Bill proposing the establishment of Fast-Track Courts designed to expedite cases against offenders in these matters. As Rijiju concluded his address, the call for reform in examination protocols became increasingly evident.

Despite efforts to focus on legislative solutions, the protests continued unabated, with Opposition MPs chanting slogans and remaining obstructive. The Deputy Speaker, Jagdambika Pal, made several attempts to restore order but ultimately had to adjourn the House due to the lack of cooperation from the Opposition members.

Opposition Criticism and Calls for Accountability

The demands from the Opposition included calls for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan along with an insistence on holding comprehensive discussions regarding the NEET controversy during the current Monsoon Session of Parliament. With protests intensifying, both inside and outside the Parliament, the situation has remained tense as Opposition leaders decried the government’s response to the issue.

Prior to the Lok Sabha proceedings, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Modi’s choice to release a video rather than address the Parliament directly. Kharge highlighted the need for the Prime Minister to engage formally with the House to clarify his position. “He should speak in Parliament; only then we will understand his authentic words,” he remarked.

Kharge’s comments resonate with sentiments from other Opposition leaders who have stressed the importance of direct accountability within the parliamentary framework. The ongoing NEET paper leak controversy has thus far marked a significant point of contention in the current political climate, underscoring the need for transparency and discussion among parliamentary members.
