The Keralam Women and Child Development Department is set to host the event ‘Resurge – Safe Women, Safe Kerala’ in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the Independence Day celebrations. This gathering is scheduled to take place from 9.30 PM on August 14 until 1 AM on August 15. Women and Child Development Minister Bindu Krishna announced this initiative on August 13, 2026. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan will open the event at the University College Junction, located in front of Palayam Market.

The festivities will include a diverse array of cultural and sporting activities along the route stretching from University College Junction to Ayurveda College Junction. Participants can enjoy free entry to all segments of the event, aimed at encouraging community involvement.

The central theme of ‘Resurge’ is focused on renewal and new beginnings. It encapsulates the empowerment of women to overcome fears, take ownership of public spaces, and advance with assurance. Prominent slogans such as ‘Safe Women, Safe Keralam’ and ‘Freedom is not just for the day, but also for the night’ will guide the programme’s messaging.

Objectives and Awareness Sessions

The programme aspires to enhance societal awareness regarding women’s entitlement to public spaces during the night. It promotes the safety and freedom of movement for women in Keralam. Various sessions will be held to educate attendees about mechanisms for women’s safety, self-defence tactics, health and fitness guidelines, and opportunities available for women entrepreneurs.

The event will kick off with a rally featuring women riders on motorcycles, followed by a cycling rally that will see the participation of 25 women from the She Cycling collective. Additional highlights include a skating performance by 40 girls from Team Poojappura and a Kalaripayattu display performed by 40 young participants. The police will also conduct self-defence training sessions specifically designed for women.

Other attractions promised at the event include stalls set up by the Indian Air Force Family Welfare Association, various dance performances by female artists and college students, musical acts, and presentations of poetry. A Zumba session will also be made available for all attendees.

Entrepreneurial Exhibitions and Support Facilities

An entrepreneurial exhibition showcasing products by 30 women entrepreneurs will be arranged, alongside a ‘Wall of Freedom’ for women to share their perspectives. Information about women’s safety apps and helplines will also be part of the displays, complemented by a police help desk and facilities provided by the She Team.

The organisers have assured attendees that essential services will be readily available at the event. These include first aid, ambulance services, drinking water, and accessible toilets to ensure a comfortable experience for all participants.

The programme is being conducted with assistance from multiple departments including the Home Department, Keralam Police, Public Works Department, and Local Self Government Department, along with the Keralam Women’s Commission and Keralam Youth Commission. Various voluntary organisations, college students, and women entrepreneurs are also participating to support this initiative.

Minister Bindu Krishna expressed an open invitation for community members to engage in the event, reinforcing the message that “Freedom is not just for the day, but also for the night. Safe Women, Safe Keralam.” This collaborative approach aims to encourage a sense of security and empowerment among women in the state.
