K.C. Venugopal, the general secretary of Congress, has publicly condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labelling his administration as “totally anti-student, anti-youth.” This statement followed a police crackdown on student protestors during a march to the Parliament concerning the alleged leak of the NEET-UG examination papers. Venugopal expressed his belief that the Prime Minister is severely disconnected from the realities of the youth and student community in India.

According to Venugopal, the handling of the protest has revealed the government’s true nature. He questioned the justification for such aggressive measures against demonstrators engaged in peaceful protest. He noted the presence of injured students and asked rhetorically what crime they’d committed, emphasising that they were merely exercising their right to express dissent.

While addressing the media outside Parliament, Venugopal highlighted that students from different parts of the country had gathered to raise legitimate concerns regarding NEET and CBSE examinations. He called the government’s reaction an indication of its vulnerabilities, asserting, “This government is a totally scared government.” He alleged insensitivity on part of the authorities towards genuine student issues.

Adjournment Motion Submitted in Lok Sabha

Venugopal has also announced plans to raise related concerns in the Lok Sabha, where he submitted an adjournment motion notice. This motion aims to suspend the usual order of business to address the growing crisis surrounding the examination system in India, including incidents of alleged paper leaks and police actions taken against protestors. He is pushing for accountability and a review of the incidents involving the examination bodies.

Furthermore, he expressed the need for tangible actions against those involved in the NEET-CBSE exam leak and called for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He indicated that the Congress party would continue to emphasise this issue throughout the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has also weighed in on the matter. He voiced concern over the treatment of students, asserting that they were beaten merely for seeking answers to questions crucial for their futures. Gandhi has urged for a thorough discussion in Parliament on the need for accountability following the alleged brutality towards students and the ongoing examination crisis.

Monsoon Session Marked By Disruptions Over Student Protests

The Monsoon Session of Parliament, which commenced on July 17, has witnessed consistent disruptions primarily due to ongoing protests over the NEET-UG issue. Members of the opposition across various parties have been actively participating in protests, leading to repeated adjournments in both Houses. The issue has sparked significant concern among students and opposition leaders alike, leading to widespread discussions about the government’s approach to handling student grievances.

As tensions escalate over the treatment of protestors, Venugopal’s statements have ignited further debate surrounding the government’s policies towards students. The situation remains fluid, with the opposition determined to raise these matters further in Parliament.
