On July 22, Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, and Union Health Minister JP Nadda visited Medanta Hospital in Gurugram to inquire about the condition of activist Sonam Wangchuk. This visit comes during an ongoing period of heightened tensions following a recent protest in which Wanchuk has emerged as a significant figure.

Wangchuk’s Indefinite Hunger Strike

Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28, continuing even after being transferred from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta. This transfer occurred after directions from the Delhi High Court. Wangchuk remains a central figure in ongoing protests aimed at addressing the issues faced by students and communities affected by recent governmental actions.

Following violent clashes that erupted during a ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, thousands of supporters gathered at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday, resuming demonstrations after a brief retreat. Participants reported facing excessive force from police during the previous day’s confrontations, prompting intense discussions about the treatment of protesters and the response of law enforcement authorities.

The activist’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has stated that Wangchuk intends to maintain his hunger strike in solidarity with students who allegedly suffered injuries during the police actions. Delhi High Court’s Involvement

Earlier in the day on July 22, the Delhi High Court ordered Wangchuk’s transfer to Medanta Hospital after considering a plea filed by Angmo. The court’s decision was based on a submission by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who indicated that the Centre raised no objections regarding the activist’s transfer under judicial oversight.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, directed Medanta Hospital to establish a specialised medical team to oversee Wangchuk’s treatment comprehensively. This development aims to ensure that he receives the necessary care while continuing his protest actions.

Furthermore, the court advised Wangchuk to adhere strictly to the medical advice provided by hospital personnel while under constant supervision. This instruction aims to balance the activist’s health needs with his commitment to the cause he champions.

Protesters Continue Their Demonstration

Despite the recent events, the organisers of the protest, primarily led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), have declared that the demonstrations will continue indefinitely. They have opted to suspend further marches towards Parliament while seeking to reformulate their strategies in response to the confrontations with law enforcement.
