Israeli Airstrikes Kill 12 in Gaza Despite Ceasefire, Raising Scrutiny Over Police Targets

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have led to the deaths of at least twelve individuals over the last two days, according to local health officials. This recent surge in violence has raised concerns given the ongoing ceasefire that has been in place for several months. The fatalities occurred in various locations, including central and southern Gaza, as well as the Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern region.

Among the deceased are three family members from central Gaza and three police officers, alongside a man and a child. Hospital officials confirmed these details, highlighting the tragic toll of the attacks. In a specific incident on Tuesday, an airstrike targeting a police station within the crowded Jabaliya refugee camp resulted in the deaths of a woman and six police officers, as reported by officials from Al Aqsa Hospital.

Furthermore, Nasser Hospital officials relayed that a man was killed during a bombing at a tent camp in Khan Younis, while additional reports indicated that Israeli forces fatally shot a child in the Muwasi area, located near Rafah. The Israeli military has yet to provide a comprehensive comment regarding these strikes in both central and southern Gaza.

Israeli Military Stance on Targeted Strikes

The Israeli military has maintained that police stations are deemed legitimate targets if they are allegedly being used to facilitate military activities or if personnel present are linked to such actions. However, the military did not disclose the specific activities it believed were ongoing at the Jabaliya police station or offer evidence that hostile actions were being plotted there.

Col. Mohamad Marwan Salem, identified by the Hamas-run Interior Ministry, was among those killed. He served as a senior police commander and oversaw the Jabaliya police station. Hamas, which has governed Gaza for several years, operates both an armed wing and civilian police, with its Interior Ministry responsible for its security services. According to Hamas officials, the police force’s role is primarily focused on law enforcement and maintaining order in the territory.

The targeting of police personnel by Israeli forces has drawn criticism from the United Nations human rights office, which noted instances of attacks on police forces during everyday law enforcement operations. This pattern of incidents has led to concerns that Israeli operations do not sufficiently differentiate between police and armed group members in Gaza.

Long-Term Context of Violence and Ceasefire Fragility

The tenuous ceasefire agreement established in October was intended to bring an end to the protracted conflict between Israel and Hamas; however, recent violence has cast doubt on its effectiveness. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that at least 1,123 individuals have died since this ceasefire commenced. While the Ministry is aligned with the Hamas-led administration and maintains casualty records, it does not provide a breakdown of civilian versus militant deaths, although women and children reportedly constitute a significant number of the casualties.

From Israel’s perspective, the airstrikes are described as retaliatory actions in response to militant activities and violations, with five Israeli soldiers purportedly killed since the ceasefire was enacted. The hostilities escalated following a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, that resulted in around 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 individuals.

In conclusion, the continuation of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza amid the alleged ceasefire raises pressing concerns about the humanitarian consequences and the ongoing spiral of violence. The situation remains fluid, with losses mounting across both sides as the conflict evolves.
