Israeli Strikes Result in Deaths of Palestinian Siblings in Muwasi Camp

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israeli military operations in Gaza on Saturday led to the death of two Palestinian siblings in the Muwasi camp, located in the southern region of the territory. According to reports from local hospitals and rescue services, the attacks also resulted in injuries to additional individuals in a separate strike targeting Gaza City. The Israeli military stated that the incidents specifically aimed at Hamas militants.

Nasser Hospital reported that the strike in Muwasi targeted tents providing shelter for displaced individuals, resulting in the death of 15-year-old Islam Moussa and her 30-year-old brother, Abdullah Moussa. Additionally, at least seven others sustained injuries. In a separate action, a strike on a tent in western Gaza City reportedly injured at least 12 persons, most of whom were women, according to Shifa Hospital.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society indicated that among the injured, two were in critical condition. The Israeli military confirmed it had conducted an operation in the Muwasi area, stating its focus was on a Hamas militant but did not disclose further information regarding the specifics of the attack.

Ongoing Casualties and Military Activity

On the same day, residents of Gaza City reported an intense explosion, which the Israeli military claimed was another strike targeting a Hamas militant. They maintained that they had no knowledge of any civilian casualties resulting from these strikes. Following the initial attacks, further strikes were reported to continue in central Gaza, although immediate details regarding casualties were not available.

The current military actions come despite a fragile ceasefire established in October, which had temporarily halted the most intense conflicts between Israel and Hamas. However, strikes and shelling have persisted almost daily, with both parties accusing one another of breaching the terms of the ceasefire. According to Israeli sources, they are targeting Hamas militants who they argue pose a threat and are acting in defence of their national security.

Since the ceasefire was implemented, Gaza’s Health Ministry, affiliated with the Hamas-led authorities, reports that over 1,030 individuals have lost their lives due to ongoing military operations. While the ministry provides detailed casualty data, it does not differentiate between civilians and militants in its records. Additionally, a recent statement indicated that over 250 children have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire.

International Reactions and Accusations

An independent team of experts commissioned by the United Nations has accused Israel of intentionally targeting children during military operations in Gaza, reiterating previous allegations of genocide against the Palestinian population. Israel has consistently denied any claims regarding genocide.

The ongoing conflict, which began on 7 October 2023 with a Hamas-led attack that resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities in southern Israel and the taking of 251 hostages, has marked a significant escalation in violence. Gaza’s Health Ministry asserts that Israel’s military actions have led to the deaths of more than 73,050 Palestinians, including those who have died since the ceasefire commenced.

As the situation develops, reports of casualties and military engagements continue to emerge, heightening concerns regarding the humanitarian impact on civilians in the region. Hospitals and health organisations remain under strain as they cope with the influx of injured individuals from the ongoing strikes.
