Iraq Arrests 47 Politicians and Officials in Major Anti-Corruption Campaign

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iraqi security forces detained a notable number of politicians and senior officials during an extensive anti-corruption operation early on Sunday, according to a spokesperson for the government. This operation was launched as part of a broader initiative directed by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, who has expressed a commitment to combat corruption within the country.

The elite Counter Terrorism Service units conducted raids in the Green Zone of Baghdad, a heavily fortified area that houses government offices and foreign embassies. Legal and security sources reported that 47 individuals were taken into custody, including various members of parliament and other government figures.

This crackdown aligns with al-Zaidi’s promises made since he took office in May, pledging to address the deep-rooted issue of corruption that has plagued the nation. The operations undertaken on Sunday were carried out following judicial authorities’ issuance of arrest warrants aimed at suspected networks involved in corrupt activities.
