Iran Relocates FIFA World Cup 2026 Base Camp from US to Mexico

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Iranian football team has officially announced its decision to move its base camp for the FIFA World Cup 2026 from the United States to Mexico. This change was confirmed by Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, following FIFA’s approval. The shift occurs in the context of escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, ahead of the tournament scheduled for next year.

Initially, the Iranian team was set to conduct their training in Tucson, Arizona. However, they will now establish their camp in Tijuana, Mexico, which is strategically located near the US border, facilitating easier access for their Group G matches in the United States.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Mehdi Taj elaborated on the approval process, indicating that all team base camps for participating countries must receive consent from FIFA. He expressed satisfaction with the outcome after productive discussions with tournament officials in Istanbul and a subsequent meeting in Tehran with FIFA Secretary General.

Political Climate Influencing Decision

The relocation of Iran’s base camp is largely influenced by prevailing security concerns tied to the geopolitical climate, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and broader instability in the Middle East. Prior to the decision, the Iranian Football Federation had explored various alternatives to ensure the safety and effectiveness of their preparations in light of an uncertain political environment in the US.

Despite moving their base, the Iranian team is still scheduled to play their group matches in the United States as planned. Their World Cup journey will commence against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in California on June 16, followed by additional group-stage games against Belgium and Egypt later in the tournament.

Earlier in May, former US President Donald Trump expressed support for Iran’s participation in the competition after FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated that Iran would indeed play its matches in the United States. Trump stated his approval of the situation, showcasing the complexities of international involvement in the upcoming tournament.

Lack of Official Confirmation from FIFA

As it stands, FIFA has not yet made a public announcement regarding the change of Iran’s base camp. Nonetheless, the approval from the Iran Football Federation — once formally acknowledged — would enable Iran to remain outside of the United States for a significant portion of the tournament while still ensuring travel for their matches.

Prior to this announcement, Mehdi Taj had highlighted the importance of addressing logistical and security concerns with FIFA officials. He had mentioned his intention to confer with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to secure guarantees for Iran’s respectful treatment during the World Cup.

The issue garnered attention during the FIFA Congress earlier this year, where the Iranian delegation’s absence was notably remarked upon amid ongoing political uncertainties. Although FIFA has yet to confirm the move officially, the Iran Football Federation’s adaptation indicates their efforts to navigate the challenges posed by the current geopolitical context while ensuring their participation in the tournament.
