Iran Allegedly Knew President Trump’s Exact Location During Turkey Summit

The CSR Journal Magazine

US intelligence, as reported by The New York Times, suggests that Iranian operatives were aware of President Donald Trump’s exact whereabouts in Ankara during the NATO summit held last month. This included knowledge about the specific floor where he was staying. The intelligence raised alarms regarding a potential threat to the president’s safety.

According to two US officials familiar with the situation, multiple pieces of information suggested a credible and targeted threat against Trump. Intelligence indicated the possibility that a surface-to-air missile could be used against the aircraft transporting the president. Moreover, someone in the vicinity of the NATO summit was allegedly observed with a shoulder-fired missile.

The severity of the threat led Secret Service and senior administration officials to implement a decoy operation to ensure Trump’s safe departure from Turkey. This arrangement became particularly urgent as Trump prepared to leave Ankara on July 8, the final day of the NATO summit.

Decoy Operation Details and Execution

On the day of his departure, Trump had announced his intention to fly home on an older model of Air Force One, stating it was for “old time’s sake.” Cameras captured him boarding the aircraft, creating a public image of normalcy. However, his actual departure protocol involved a secretive transfer from the Air Force One to a smaller military aircraft, executed through an airport catering container.

The older Air Force One took off with White House officials, security personnel, and journalists on board, effectively serving as a decoy. Following this covert exit, Trump made a scheduled stop in Britain, where he discreetly reboarded an earlier aircraft before ultimately returning on the Qatari-donated Boeing 747-8. This sophisticated operation remained undisclosed for several weeks.

In a statement on August 13, Trump confirmed the shift to a different aircraft, mentioning he had been advised by the Secret Service and military officials. He noted the presence of a threat but remarked that he often receives various threats, not delving deeply into the details.

Historical Context of Secret Travel Arrangements

US Presidents have frequently employed secret travel methods and decoy aircraft during visits to potentially hazardous locations. For example, President Joe Biden secretly travelled to Kyiv in 2023, first flying to Poland before discreetly taking an overnight train into Ukraine. During his term, Trump undertook a covert trip to Afghanistan for Thanksgiving in 2019, using deceptive travel arrangements to create the illusion of spending the holiday at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

Other former presidents, including George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton, also engaged in covert trips or adopted misleading travel strategies for security reasons. However, what made Trump’s situation particularly unusual was the continuation of secrecy after leaving the immediate threat area. The press travelling with him was unadvised that he was no longer on the aircraft they believed was carrying him.

Garrett M. Graff, author of “Raven Rock,” remarked on the unprecedented nature of the extended secrecy regarding Trump’s location during this operation. He noted that while presidents have previously used decoy aircraft, the level of sustained obfuscation surrounding Trump’s whereabouts was not customary.

Previous Iranian Threats Targeting Trump

Donald Trump has previously faced Iranian threats and assassination plots. Notably, in 2024, he narrowly avoided a bullet from a would-be assassin during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Additionally, he was targeted at his Florida golf course later that same year. Those incidents were not directly connected to the recent intelligence claims regarding Iranian threats.

Moreover, a separate case involved a man convicted in relation to a murder-for-hire scheme targeting Trump, which emerged during the Biden administration. US officials stated that this conspiracy was linked to Iranian operatives working through a proxy. The latest intelligence underscores the ongoing nature of threats Trump faces, particularly while abroad.
