IndiGo Passengers Chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ Slogans Amid West Bengal Election Results

The CSR Journal Magazine

Following the announcement of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results, a video has emerged showing a passenger on an IndiGo flight chanting “Jai Shri Ram” and other slogans. The clip, which has gained significant attention online, features a man who appears to be from West Bengal recording himself while proclaiming various religious phrases, including “Har Har Mahadev,” “Jai Bangal,” and “Jai Durga.”

The footage showcases a boisterous atmosphere as the individual raises his hand in the air, encouraging other passengers to join in the chanting. Many of those seated nearby can be seen smiling and laughing, and some participate in the slogans, indicating a celebratory mood within the aircraft.

Election Outcome and Its Impact

The video was shared shortly after the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were released on May 4, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a historic victory. The BJP reportedly won 207 out of 294 seats, surpassing the required majority threshold of 148 seats. In contrast, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, experienced a significant reduction in its presence, securing only 80 seats after being in power since 2011.

Inside the IndiGo flight, the atmosphere seemed joyous, as more passengers joined in the chanting as the video continued. The individual filming moved the camera around the aisle, capturing the reactions of fellow travellers as they engaged in this spontaneous display of enthusiasm.

As the clip circulated online, it garnered various responses from social media users. Some found the moment captivating, interpreting it as a reflection of the heightened emotions following the election results. For many, it represented a natural celebration of democracy and political change within the state.

Concerns and Criticism Over Political Sloganeering

Nevertheless, others voiced concerns regarding the appropriateness of such actions on commercial flights. Critics argued that aeroplanes are public spaces where political expressions could lead to discomfort among passengers who may hold differing views. This has brought attention to the need for a consistent approach to political demonstrations, regardless of the ideology being expressed.

Further discussions arose around the acceptability of similar chants were the political messages to be reversed. Some users questioned the potential for tension on flights, noting that while celebrations are common post-elections, the inclusion of political slogans in confined settings could stir discord among passengers.

Moreover, there were observations about the increasing intersection of political expression with everyday public spaces, highlighting how polarised political conversations in India have become. Users remarked that incidents such as this exemplify the complexities arising from public celebrations of political victories.

Post-Election Violence in West Bengal

The BJP’s achievement in West Bengal signifies a considerable political shift, marking the party’s first victory in the state. However, despite the electoral outcome, reports of violence have surfaced, with incidents of arson, vandalism, and fatal assaults reported in various regions of the state. Such developments have marred the celebratory atmosphere associated with the election results.

The assembly elections, which comprised 294 seats, were held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with a reported voter turnout surpassing 92 per cent. This high level of participation is reflective of the intense political engagement among voters in the state.
