Air India Aircraft Encounters IndiGo Flight in Gujarat

The CSR Journal Magazine

A near collision incident occurred involving an Air India flight and an IndiGo aircraft at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on the evening of June 24, 2026. The situation unfolded around 6.30 pm when the Air India plane, which had arrived from Mumbai, mistakenly turned onto an active taxiway instead of continuing towards its assigned parking area.

At the same time, the IndiGo flight, designated for Mumbai, was taxiing on the same taxiway in preparation for take-off. Thankfully, air traffic control (ATC) quickly intervened, instructing both pilots to halt their aircraft, thereby preventing a potential accident. The two planes were approximately 200 metres apart when they came to a stop.

Reports indicate that the swift actions of air traffic control, coupled with the diligent response of the pilots, played a crucial role in averting a serious situation. Fortunately, no injuries or damage to either aircraft were reported following the incident.

Response and Aftermath of the Incident

Following the incident, the Air India aircraft was towed to its designated parking bay without further complications. Subsequently, regular taxiing and departure operations were resumed for the IndiGo flight. In an official statement, Air India clarified that flight AI-2493, which had landed from Mumbai, took an unintended turn during its taxiing process. The airline emphasised that there was no compromise on safety for either passengers or crew, attributing the safe resolution of the event to ground assistance.

IndiGo also issued a statement regarding its flight 6E-5160, which was preparing for departure to Mumbai. The airline reported that the presence of another aircraft on the taxiway prompted safety measures, leading to the temporary halt of both flights. The IndiGo flight subsequently departed safely and completed its journey, landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.

In light of this occurrence, Air India has informed the relevant aviation regulators and initiated an investigation into the events that transpired. This investigation aims to determine the causes of this near miss and prevent similar situations in the future.

Details of the Aircrafts Involved

Both aircraft involved in the incident were part of the Airbus A320 family, which are typically configured to accommodate between 150 to 180 passengers. However, the exact number of passengers on board during this event has not been disclosed. The A320 aircraft are commonly used in domestic and international flights, known for their operational efficiency and reliability.

Air India and IndiGo are two of India’s leading airlines, serving millions of passengers every year. Such incidents, while rare, highlight the importance of stringent safety protocols and effective communication among flight crews and air traffic control.

As the investigation progresses, both airlines are likely to enhance their operational measures to further bolster safety and prevent similar occurrences. Open communication between airlines and regulatory bodies will be essential in maintaining the highest standards of aviation safety across the industry.
