The Indian Army has successfully executed extensive humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in Navsari, Gujarat, rescuing a total of 57 individuals from floodwaters. The operation took place at Tata High School Ring Road on July 25, 2026, and involved the evacuation of 23 vulnerable civilians to a designated relief shelter in Sanduri Village, located in the Madhuban Dam area.

Responding promptly to a call for help, the Southern Command of the Indian Army coordinated its efforts with local civil authorities. The collaborative effort aimed to assist residents who were impacted by the ongoing floods. Medical assistance was provided on-site, while essential supplies and food rations were distributed to those who remained in the village.

As the situation unfolds, the Indian Army continues to carry out relief and rescue operations in various affected regions. The teams are diligently working to ensure safety and support for individuals facing challenges due to the severe weather conditions.

Highway Closures and Rainfall Impact

In light of the heavy rainfall that has plagued the state, the Ahmedabad District Police announced on July 25 the closure of the Ahmedabad-Viramgam Highway due to excessive water flow. They stated that no vehicle movement was deemed safe in either direction between Sanand and Viramgam because of the hazardous conditions on the road.

A spokesperson from the Ahmedabad District Police emphasised the danger posed by the water flow, noting that the highway would be closed temporarily to prevent potential accidents. Concurrently, Ahmedabad District Collector Bhavya Verma reassured the public that while continuous rainfall was noted, the situation in the district remained under control.

Collector Verma indicated that Dholka and Viramgam had experienced the heaviest rainfall in the previous 24 hours. He confirmed that authorities were maintaining heightened vigilance in these two areas, despite a lull in rainfall over the past eight hours. Verma stated that rescue operations were being conducted in collaboration with various agencies, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the police, and local administrative bodies.

Additional Rescue Efforts Across Gujarat

On a related note, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi inspected flood-affected areas in Umargam within Valsad district on July 21. The Deputy Chief Minister’s visit aimed to assess the impact of ongoing heavy rainfall and engage with affected residents. During the visit, he encouraged the public to stay informed and heed instructions from local authorities, while advising them to avoid succumbing to misinformation.

In earlier incidents, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had successfully rescued 67 individuals, including 25 women and 22 children, from floodwaters in Sarikhurad village, also in Navsari district. This operation was initiated following alerts received from civil administration about villagers stranded by rising floodwaters. Efforts in the Tapi district were successful in rescuing 11 villagers from Dhodiyawad Faliya, which was inundated due to heavy rainfall.

Emergency services in Surat city have been active around the clock, undertaking continued rescue and relief operations. Reports indicate that over 50 residents have been rescued from various locations including Geeta Nagar, Shitala Mata Mandir area in Varachha, and Krishna Nagar in Udhna. Overall, 2,244 affected residents in Surat city and 2,603 from rural areas are reported to have been transferred to relief centres and safer locations as rescuers remain engaged in their operations.
